Beat Bill Beat Bill

July 31, 2012 by Jay McGillicuddy 2 Comments

9th holeThose are words you might expect to hear from Bill Wilson’s opponent this week Jay McGillicuddy but NO they were from his own teammate Norm Comeau. Let’s put it in perspective as I believe we are all very competitive but Norm is very very competitive and we had to chuckle as Bill and I had honors most of the round and when Bill would hit a Wilson patented bomb Norm would then tee it up swing and yell “Beat Bill, Beat Bill” cracked us up. Too bad as I don’t think Norm out drove Bill once. I could be wrong… LOL.

In the featured match this week we saw Norm Comeau take on Jim Marnie. Marnie not being his old self of late has struggled getting off the tee. This week he was bombing them and very consistent. On one Comeau did hit a nice drive down the left side of the fairway and actually may have been longer than Wilson but Comeau and Marnie halved. On two both parred and then on 3 we waited for about 15 minutes and the group in front of us barely made it off the tee. Marnie’s tee shot ended up in the trap. and Comeau made a good up and down to go one up. Comeau pars 4 and remains at even par as Marnie makes a double, Comeau up 2. On the par 5 5th Comeau misses a little bunny and Marnie strokes and closes the gap to one down. Marnie struggles again on 6 and goes back to 2 down. Both players double 7 and both players bogey 8 and 9 and Comeau limps in with 41 and poor putting and Marnie struggles again with a 46. Comeau 13 Marnie 7.

Bob Trottier played Steve King this week and King being Trottier’s nemesis and being on vacation last week played great but Trottier being on a roll of late put the pedal to the medal and fired another great round under par. That makes two weeks in a row under par and 3 weeks ago he shot an even par 36. I can’t remember anyone shooting under par two weeks in a row, can you? Trottier started off with a birdie and King being a little rusty doubled. King got on track as he birdied 2 and slid back as he bogeyed 3 and Trottier parred. King stroking on 4 parred and walked off the green even. A bogey by King on 5 allowed him to halve that hole but the 21st birdie by Trottier on 6 led him to one up. They halved 7 with pars and on 8 Trottier had a great opportunity for birdie but King prevailed with his 2nd birdie of the round and halved the match. Coming down to the final hole Trottier parred and King bogeyed and Trottier finally gets in the win column against King. Great round Bob! Trottier 34 King 39. Trottier 12 King 8. Looks like the double bogey on 1 and bogey on 5 were King’s downfall.

Skip Gray took on gimpy Mike Landry and Landry shot an impressive 40 especially on a bum knee that had just been scoped two weeks ago. Landry started off with a par and a 4 stroke lead as Gray stumbled to quad on 1. Landry pars two and is now up two and up 6 strokes. They halve 3 with bogeys and they halve 4 and Landry makes birdie on 5 and is pouring it on Gray. Landry is now 3 up. With bogeys on 6 & 9 Landry finishes 4 over par and a great round. Gray finishes with a par on the tough uphill 9th. Landry 15 Gray 5. Gray 53 Landry 40.

Berry on the 1st teeMike Berry teed it up against Eric La Francis and La Francis parred one to go one up. They halved 2 with pars and Berry squares it up on 3 with a par and both make par on 4 and Berry wins 5 with a par and is one up. La Francis wins the dogleg 6th and the match is all even. Berry wins 7 with a bogey but slips up on 8 with a double. Berry makes a great par on 9 and this match ends up tied 10/10. Both players shoot 44. Berry already quaking in his knees with the thought of playing Waterman for the Championship.

Brian Steeves subbing for Norm Pelletier matched up against George Vigneault and Vigneault was giving Steeves 3 strokes. Vigneault jumped out to a one up lead after one with a par. They both parred 2 but Steeves was stroking and captured two. Match even. Vigneault parred 3 and jumped back to a one up lead. They halved 4 and 5 and Steeves halved the match with a great win on 6.  Match all square. Vigneault turned it all around as he parred 7, 8 and 9. Vigneault cruises to a 13-7 win. Steeves 46 Vigneault 38.

Glenn Acciard and Jim Waterman paired up and Waterman has been very consistent of late and this week was no exception. They halved one with pars and then Waterman grabbed a great birdie on 2 to go one up. With a long wait on 3 Acciard doubled and Waterman bogeyed to go two up. Waterman continued to pour it on as he parred 4 and 5 to go 4 up and with a bogey on 6 went 5 up crushed Acciard. Acciard won 7 but 8 and 9 were all Waterman and Waterman finishes par par and wins big 17 3. Acciard shoots a paltry 55 and Waterman fires his 3rd 39 in a row.

Dennis Croteau and Tom Hale teed it up and Croteau found out what a PBFU is as he birdied the 1st hole and pulled a Wilson. Croteau tripled bogeyed 2 and Hale parred. Hale went on to win the next three holes in even par and was now up 3. Croteau won 6 but Hale won 7 and Croteau won 8 and they halved 9. Hale wins big 13-7 Croteau shoots a disappointing 47 and Hale wins with a 49.

George Duffield played Erkan Duzenli and this was a close match as Duffield went one uo after one and Duzenli grabbed two as Duffield doubled. They halved 3 and 4 and Duffield won 5. This was the last hole either player would win as they halved the rest of the holes in. Duffield wins 11-9 and Duffield shoots 40 and Duzenli 43. Great round by both.

Steve Maddox subbing for the employed Alan Imlach teed it up against Dominick D’ Orio and Maddox jumped out real quick with a 3 up lead. They halved 4 and D’ Orio won 5 but Maddox righted the ship and won 6 but D’ Orio took 7 & 8 but Maddox won 9 and cruised on in with a 13-7 victory. Maddox 48 D’ Orio 54.

Paul Comeau and Rick Maloney battled it out this week and Comeau saw himself go one down after one and then Maloney tripled the par 5 2nd and Comeau birdied to tie the match and stay at even par. On 3 both players bogeyed and then Comeau started his torrid pace as he parred 4 and 5 to take a two up lead They halved the tricky par 4 sixth. On 7 Comeau almost  made the shot of his life as his tee ball rolled close to the hole and Comeau won his first closest to the pin in quite awhile. Comeau within 5 feet and Comeau made the unimaginable as he three putted and still won the hole. Comeau closes Maloney out but Maloney didn’t give up as Maloney won 8 & 9. Maloney 8 Comeau 12. Maloney 45 Comeau 42.

Vinny Serafino and Rich Juknavorian took each other on and Serafino marched right out of the box and birdied one and he didn’t let that birdie faze him. He then went on and took the next three holes. Serafino now 4 up and Juke bounced back to win 5 & 6. They both halved 7 and Juke kept the pressure on but Serafino captured the 9th with a par and a nice 11-9 victory. Serafino 52 Juknavorian 47.

In the final match Bill Wilson took on his nemesis Jay McGillicuddy. McGillicuddy coming off a perfect round 32 told Wilson they are going low today. McGill led off on one and pounded his drive down the left side and just short of the apron.  Wilson pushed his tee ball into the rough.  McGill chipped with a sand wedge and the ball just nestled right up next to the hole, Wilson gives him the birdie tap in. On two McGill skies his tee ball and finds himself handcuffed on the left side of  the cart path. With over hanging tree limbs McGill punches out. Wilson bombs one down the middle. Both players walk away with par. On three Wilson looks like he may be closest too and both players par. The 4th hole led to McGill’s first over par hole in 14 consecutive holes dating back to 7/11 on the 7 th hole against Steve King. McGill pushes his drive and the ball is lost. Wilson halves the match. Wilson goes one up on 5 as McGill bogeys. McGill bogeys 6 and Wilson doubles as his second shot hooks into the trees near the cart path scaring the foursome that just left the green. On 7 Wilson made a great par saving putt to halve the hole. McGill tees it up on 8 and launches a beauty as the ball straddles the trap and the green and rests just above the hole about 15 ‘ away. Wilson pulls the 3 wood out and  “not to be out done” Wilson plants a beauty just below the hole. McGill’s downhill eagle putt lands an inch to the left of the hole. Wilson blows his eagle putt past the hole and up the hill. Wilson misses the birdie putt. Wilson one down. On 9 both players launch their drives and both players 3rd shots are within gimmie range and both players concede and the match is dead even 10-10. Wislon 38 McGill 38. Another great match.

I listen to Norm all the time saying “Beat George” every time we play. I am getting used to it. Problem is, he doesn’t always beat me. We have very competitive matches and I always look foward to them. Great job Jay!
