The 2013 Season Begins

April 3, 2013 by Jay McGillicuddy 1 Comment

MarnieWell, it’s that time of year again and here we go, another golf season is underway. This was not your usual golf season opener that we have come to love. It was very windy and cold this year. At start time we had overcast skies and temps hovering around 45 degrees with winds howling around 20-25 mph with gusts to 35 mph.

Everyone gave it their all and the scores reflected more of the weather than one would have expected from this group. Low medalist were new sub Jason Pelletier who carded one of the first birdies of the season on the tricky par 4 4th hole as he pulled a Trottier and chipped in for a well deserved 3. He took on the sweet swinging Steve King but King was battling the cold, wind and opening week rustiness and succumbed to Pelletier who shot 43 to King’s 49. King was only able to capture 2 holes and halve 2 more as he went down 14-6.

Jay McGillicuddy opened up this year against the number one golfer in the league last year Bob Trottier and McGill found a lot of luck out there as he tripped up Trottier and captured the beer match 43-44.  No Chip Ins for Trottier this week but McGill’s putting is what kept him in the match. McGill wins 13-7. You know Trottier will bounce back next time they meet which will be May 8th.

Other close matches were between the big $1.00 gamblers of Jim Marnie and Jim Waterman. This match went back and forth as they seesawed thru the first 4 holes and it was a double bogey 6 on the first hole and a double bogey 5 on the par 3 third that cost Waterman the match. Marnie scores 44 to Waterman’s 45 as Marnie slips by 11-9.

Erkan Duzenli and Dennis Croteau had a battle for the ages as they both carded 48’s and Duzenli was getting a stroke and Duzenli jumped out quickly to a one up lead and then they halved 2 but Croteau stormed back to win 3 & 4 to only allow Duzenli to claw back in on 5 as Croteau’s quadruple along with a triple on 6 opened up the door for Duzenli.  Croteau finished by wining 2 of the last three holes but that was not good enough as Duzenli wins 11-9.

Mike Landry took on Domonick D’Orio and Landry started strong by winning the first three out of four holes. Then D’Orio bounced back by winning two of the next three holes but Landry hung on and squeaked out a 12-8 victory.
Landry 51 D’Orio 54.

Tom Hale matched up with Glenn Acciard and this was a close match as the two went back and forth and then Acciard went two up as they made their way to the 7th tee and they halved 7 and Hale grabbed 8 but gave it right back on 9 to fall 13-7. Acciard 47 Hale 57.

Senior Pelletier and Bill Wilson made their way around the front nine but Pelletier was too much as he darted out to a 4 up lead after 5 holes. Wilson grabbed the next two but Pelletier closed the match out on 8 and Wilson grabbed an extra 2 points as he won 9. Pelletier 44 Wilson 47.  Pelletier wins 13-7.

Mike Berry teed it up against Eric La Francis and La Francis took a one up lead after one but Berry fought back and grabbed 2 and 3. La Francis said enough of this and fought back and captured 4 & 5. They halve 6 & 8 and split 7  & 9 as La Francis wins 44-46 and grabs a 12-8 win.

Vinnie Serafino and Paul Comeau played the course and Paul Comeau came away with 10 points as he parred 4 & 9. Comeau ended up with a 51. Serafino came in with 7 points and had a 58.

George Duffield played against Norm Comeau and Duffield rolled all over Comeau and won big time 14-6 as Duffield shot 44 and Comeau 48. Comeau’s double bogeys on 3 and 9 were his downfall.

Corrado Brancato teed off against Rich Juknavorian. Brancato jumped out to a quick two up lead and Juke won 3 and Brancato went to 2 up as he captured 4. Then all of a sudden Juke made a clean sweep on the way in as he won 5,6,7,8,and 9. Juke wins 54-55 and 14-6 in total points.

All in all a rough start for everyone but it’s only week one.
