When Birdies Fly

April 10, 2013 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

IMG_2499This was the week that everyone probably had wished was last week. Weather wise we were about 10 degrees warmer and a lot less wind. The course seems to be in decent shape and the greens seemed to roll very nicely, at least for me. Carts were even allowed to go 90 degrees on the fairways.

In the featured match of the day we saw a great battle between George Duffield and Jim Waterman. This match came down to the last hole as Duffield’s distance was too much for Waterman and Duffield made a clutch putt to squeak by with a nice 12-8 victory. Duffield 39 Waterman 41. The difference here was Waterman’s double bogey on 12. A great match to watch.

El Presidento teed it up against Norm Pelletier and Trottier was near perfect as he bounced back this week after a big loss to McGill last week. Pelletier started off shaky as a double bogey on ten and a double on twelve found him two down on holes and four down on strokes. This is not where you want to be when playing Trottier. They halved 13 and with Pelletier stroking on 14 Pelletier was closing in. But, the 15th saw Trottier get his birdie machine a rolling and a two up lead. Trottier pressed on and captured 16 but a poor 17 led Trottier to win 18 with another birdie and a very strong finish with a one over par 36. Nicely done. Trottier 36 Pelletier 42. Trottier 14-6.

Jim Marnie teed off against Mike Berry and we witnessed the good old Mike Berry tonight as he fired a 36 and Jim Marnie trying not to be out done fired an impressive 38. What was cool was Berry knocked in three birdies which propelled Berry to victory. Berry tied the match up with his first birdie on 15 and then halved 16 but Berry birdied 17 & 18 and that was it for Marnie. Some days you work nights. Fantastic round Mike. Berry 36 Marnie 38. Berry 13-7.

IMG_2521Croteau and Acciard matched up well this week as Croteau slipped by with a nice 11-9 victory. Each player alternated wins through the first 6 holes and then  Acciard won 16 but Croteau grabbed 17 and they halved 18 to split the match and Croteau was getting a stroke and won 11-9. Acciard & Croteau shoot 46.

D’Orio tripped up Serafino 51-53 as both players won the first two holes and then Serafino grabbed 12 & 13. D’ Orio woke up and captured 14, 15, and 16. Then Serafino won 17 and D’Orio won 18 with a bogey as Serafino tripled. D’Orio wins 12-8.

Rich Appel subbed for George Vigneault as he basks in the warmth of Myrtle Beach and Appel took on Bill Wilson. With the early starts this leads to Wilson having to work while waiting to tee off. This week was no exception as Wilson had to fly to make his tee time and as I well know this does not help your game. It’s always best to be relaxed and ready to go.  Wilson started as bad as bad can be as he heeled his drive on 10 into the woods on the left. Not the way he wanted to start but we all know Wilson will make a run before the round is over. Sure enough Wilson settled down and won 11 & 12 with bogeys and they halved 13 & 14 but on 14 Appel was stroking and managed to win this hole. They halved 15 and Appel won 16 and Wilson won 17 but a great Birdie on 18 by Wilson was not enough as Appel was stroking and they halved as Appel wins 11-9. Appel 43 Wilson 43.

Norm Comeau played the course as Eric LaFrancis was a no show. It’s tough to make points and Comeau did a great job of securing 12 points for his efforts as he carded a 7 over 42.

Paul Comeau and Erkan Duzenli matched up and Duzenli was victorious as Comeau’s quadruple on number 12 and a double on 13 led to his demise. Duzenli wins 12-8 and Comeau cards a 46 and Duzenli 43.

Skip Gray and Corrado Brancato squared off this week and Gray wins 12-8 as he shoots a 43 and Brancato 46.

McGill took on his nemesis Steve King and King roped one down the middle as usual and McGill pulled a Wilson and heeled it OB. McGill decided to re tee and left himself about a 5o yard sand wedge which he stuck to 4 feet. King makes easy par and goes one up. McGill captures 11 with a monstrous putt from about 60 feet that nestles close to the hole and King gives McGill the putt. They halve 12 and McGill goes one up with a nice par on 13 and they match scores all the way in as McGill makes some great saves to halve a couple of holes and McGill walks away with a 12-8 victory and he shoots 37 as King cards a nice 38.

Tom Hale and Rick Maloney battled it out and Maloney came out smelling like a rose in this match as he upends Hale 12-8. Maloney went one up after the 10th and they halved 11, 12 and 13 then Maloney went two up with a big win on 14. Hale made a comeback on 15 but faulted on 17 but Hale was able to salvage a couple of points for his team by winning 18. Maloney 12 Hale 8. Maloney 48 Hale 49.

In the one of the best matches of the season Mike Landry gave it his all as he tried valiantly to withstand the onslaught by Rich Juknavorian. Landry started off slow with a triple on 10, 11, and 12 but made a great birdie on 13 only to see Juke match it. That would deflate anyone but Landry lost 14 and made another birdie on 15 but runs out of gas after that and Juke storms in with a very impressive 40 to Landry’s 46. Juke wins 14-6.

There were actually 11 birdies this week and I can’t remember ever seeing that many in one week from so many guys. Great job and let’s see if we can keep the birdie train a rolling next week.
