It was a dogfight Alan didn’t expect to be in. See, Alan has been playing decent golf lately and giving three strokes to Jack Goulet on Wednesday didn’t faze him a bit. Little did he know he would find himself 3 stokes down and 2 holes down by the time he turned the corner on 14. With a slip by Goulet on 14 Imlach found himself now one hole down and even on strokes. Imlach bounced back and won 16 and 17 and wanting to get 4 points he needed a miraculous putt on 18 to halve the hole and take all 4. Well, Imlach called it as he lined up his putt and muttered right before he pulled the trigger I am going to make this as I am the greatest putter in the world or words to that effect. LOL as the putt neared the hole it fell to the bottom of the jar and Imlach laughed his way back to the clubhouse. He called it. Congrats Alan.
I played with Soupy who was subbing for Norm Comeau and he was playing against Mike Berry. Berry was getting two strokes but couldn’t seem to get out of his own way as Soupy proved why he was an A player when he played in the league regularly. The only hole Berry won was 13 and halved 16 and 17. Berry just doesn’t seem to be the player he was a few years ago. Mike will bounce back soon. Berry looked “LOST” out there this week.
Juke took on Sub Ed English who was subbing for Paul Comeau and they started on 13 and as the group approached the 18th green and finished putting I think English got frustrated with his play and the poor weather just did him in and he walked off the course never to be seen by us the rest of the night. Juke took 4.
Trottier took on Joan Wilson’s little brother Bill and Wilson found himself clawing and scratching trying to survive as he sloshed around the wet fairways and greens. It’s tough to beat someone when they dig deep and get three birdies on you and you shoot a triple and a double. I know Wilson is not satisfied shooting a 41 on the back nine and especially playing against Trottier who I am sure he prides himself on playing well against him. I look to see Wilson bounce back next time they match up and show Trottier he can give him a decent match. Congrats to Trottier for 3 birdies and shame on him for a double on 14 and bogeys on 16 and 17 which are uncharacteristic for El Presidento. A one over 36 is nothing to sneeze at. Great job.
Rick Maloney took on newcomer Jim Zaherious again and Maloney trounced him by shooting an impressive 42. Maloney jumped out to 4 up when he hiccuped on 14 but bounced right back up with a nice birdie on 15 but fell asleep on 16 then cruised on in with a nice par on 18. Maloney wins 6 holes to 2. Zaherious says revenge will be sweet.
Mike Landry took on struggling Tom Hale, looking at the card Hale jumped out to a 2 up lead and then Landry took 13 but Hale came back and took 14 and 15 to go 3 up with 3 to play. Landry scrambled back to win 16, 17 and 18 to take 3 points. Hale scored a horrendous 11 on 17 which didn’t help as he was crushed in the stroke play of his match. Tom will come back… Watch out.
Dennis Croteau ran into a streaking Steve Maddox who won the first 5 out of 7 holes and then they split 17 and 18. Looking at the card it seemed that Croteau just couldn’t gain ground on Maddox as Maddox just keeps playing better and better as the weeks go by. Dennis’ game seems to be a little up and down as of late.
McGill takes on Acciard. I knew this match would be close even though Acciard hadn’t been playing up to his old self due to a back injury but for some reason he always seems to play well against me. We both parred 10 and we both had lousy tee shots on 11 but Acciard pulled a rabbit out of his hat and chipped in from a lousy lie of the side of the green. His ball needed to catch the rough to slow it down from racing across the green. It did and a two was nicely played. We both halved 12 & 13 with bogeys and on 14 Acciard’s tee shot dribbled off the tee box and bounced it’s way down drainage ditch to the corner. A double bogey 6 had Acciard up one stroke and even on holes. Pars on 15 led to the 16th where both had sub par tee shots but Acciard’s back gave out and a snowman on 16 gave McGill the opening he needed. Pars on 17 and 18 were enough for McGill to take four from Acciard. Get well soon Glenn.
Norm Pelletier ended up playing the course as Rusty Gill didn’t want his golf clubs to get wet. Pelletier played near flawless golf as he hit a few bumps in the road on 12 14 16 and 17. 39 is good shooting especially when playing the course. No room for error.
Mr. I am back for revenge Waterman played I can beat any guy here Joan Wilson. Wilson took a one up lead after 11 but then dropped 12 and 13 to only bounce back to win 14 while gettng a stroke. They halved 15 16 and 17 and then on 18 Wilson just ran out of gas as a very unlikely 7 on the par 5 18th was Joan’s demise. Waterman bogied but was able to take 4 points on the last hole.
Jim Marnie was chomping at the bit to play Steve King but Stevie didn’t want to get wet this day. So Marnie played the course and tore it up with an impressive 3 over par 38. A double bogey to start didn’t deter Marnie from collapsing as he pulled himself together and ran off three straight pars and a bogey on 14 led to a birdie on 15 and then two straight pars to a disappointing bogey on 18. A very make able birdie hole. I am sure Jim was kicking himself for a bad start. 4 is the norm for Jim on 10. Nice round Jim.
The last two some to turn their card in was newcomer Erkan Duzenli and Skip Gray. I was walking off the 16th green heading to 17 when I saw the two of them Erkan in a cart and Gray pushing his clubs heading across the course in a direction I had no idea where they were headed, I thought Gray was going home but then I saw him turn left heading to 14. To this day I am not real sure which way they were playing the course. I think backwards best suits these two players. You should have seen the scorecard they turned in. I have been handicapper for at least 15 or 16 yrs and this was the most messed up score card I can remember trying to cipher.
Scores were placed in the wrong column and reversed and added up wrong as a wrong score was posted too. ARGH!We got it straightened out and all is well with the Wilderness League.
We have been lucky with the weather so far this year but this week was a mess. It drizzled enough just to make things miserable especially if you wear glasses.
Forecast for this coming Wednesday is afternoon showers possible. I hope this does not become a pattern. See you at the course.
“Revenge is mine”, sayeth Jim Waterman. For the second week in a row, he had to play against the big sister of the master. Having lost four points the previous week, he came out hitting hard, but the match went down to the last hole (#12) when Wilson let it slip through her fingertips. She’d like to blame it on the weather, but Jim’s shooting a 39 couldn’t be topped. In spite of the weather, it was a good match.
