The Ninth Hole Jinx

The BalsamsA big thanks to Tom Hale for opening his mouth on the tee box and telling us how he scored a 13 there on the 9th hole once. I asked him and Dennis Croteau how their match was going and Dennis said he was out of it. That’s when Tommy mentioned he scored the dreaded 13 there one time. When I teed it up I pushed it way right up over the hill and when I found the ball I chopped it out of the woods only to find it a few feet away from my cart. I was so thankful I didn’t hit the cart.

When I addressed the ball I noticed it was a Titleist and I was playing a Callaway. I played the wrong ball. I never double checked to see if it was mine or not. I had not done that in a couple of years now my streak is over. At least I am in good company as Jim Marnie did the same thing on the first hole by playing Ricky Maloney’s ball instead.

Well after a wiff and a ball driven back into the ground I finally holed out a very disappointing 12 on a hole I should have at least bogeyed. I was 2 over par going to that hole and I was finally beating El Presidento Bob Trottier. As I always say when things go bad. “NEXT”. Until we meet again Bob.

In other matches Tom Hale got himself back together at the par 4 fourth hole as he hit a great drive and second shot reminiscent of days gone by. Tom is slowly coming back to his old self.

Bill Wilson squared off against India bound Rusty Gill and Wilson showed Gill why he is in contention for MVP this second half. Wilson shot a 5 over 41 and Gill’s downfall was on the par five 5th as he scored an uncharacteristic 10. I think the last time he played this hole he was on in 2 and putting for eagle. Wilson did a Monkey see Monkey do as he had an 8 on this hole and luckily he was getting a stroke. That seemed to be the match on this one hole.

Paul Comeau showed Alan Imlach why he is moving up to the C flight with a 7 stroke win. Imlach had too many double bogeys today and that led to Comeau’s thrashing.

Jim Zaherious squeaked out a point from Mike Landry as Landry’s birdie on 7 and par on 8 notched him 3 points.

Jim Waterman continued his trail blazing stellar golf of late as he shot even par against Steve King who shot an impressive 4 over 40. But Waterman’s 3 birdies and and getting a stroke on the 5th was just too much for King.

Bob Trottier matched McGill’s birdies with bogeys and found himself down 3 holes to one going to the 8th and McGill placed his tee ball on the apron and Trottier tried to chase McGill and found himself half way in the hay between the 5th and 8th hole. McGill missed a 5 foot left to right down hill birdie putt to gain par and seal his match only to blow the strokes portion on the 9th.

Erkan Duzenli showed Rich Juknavorian he doesn’t belong in the D flight as he pounced all over Juke to win by 8 strokes and a net 3 to take all 4 points for his team.

Dennis Croteau started off bogey bogey but hitting to much club on three started his downfall as he fell to Tom Hale by three strokes and was crushed in the match play portion 5 holes to one.

Glenn Acciard played the course and finished well as he continued to try and catch Rusty Gill for 2nd place in the most birdies category well behind the 21 by Bob Trottier.

Norm Pelletier continued his dominance over Jim Marnie by firing a one over par 37 to Marnie’s 42. Marnie hit Maloney’s ball on the first hole and that could have started Marni’s down fall. Next week Marnie faces McGill and you can bet the two will be double checking every ball they hit on every shot.

Jack Goulet faced sub George Duffield and Goulet would have been better off trying to sing like Robert Goulet than playing golf this week.  A 61 by Goulet was one of his worst rounds this year and his captain Wilson was not a happy camper. Duffield jumps to the A flight the rest of the season as he subs for Rusty Gill who is vacationing back in his home land of India as he is a celebrity over there as a long drive champion.

Steve Maddox drubbed Rick Maloney by a net 7 strokes as Maloney just couldn’t get things going after taking a one up lead after 3.  Maddox played steady and took 4 away from first half MVP Maloney.

Norm Comeau continued to play another career round against George Vigneault. The steady swing of Vigneault would get him to the green but his putting was his demise. Comeau’s 4′ eagle putt on 2 left him a tap in birdie and a streak of three straight winning holes allowed Comeau to cruise to the victory.

A lot of Birdies were left out there on the course today as Trottier is walking away with the most birdies this season as he as a double digit lead over vacationing Rusty Gill.

The team standings were real close going into this week and we saw Team  4 led by Rusty Gill, Norm Comeau, Steve Maddox and Skip Gray start to inch away as there are 4 teams within 8 points of each other.  With only 5 weeks left who will end up on top and play Bob Trottier, Jim Waterman, Jim Zaherious and Alan Imlach for the championship.
