Well if it’s raining it must be a Wednesday. So many times over the years we have had rain during the day and spot showers on the course. Today was nothing new as the league ahead of us canceled and we decided to play a shot gun. Groups teed off on 10, 13 and 17 and we all finished in daylight under cloudy skies. The umbrellas only had to come out on a couple of holes and we were glad this week’s rounds in.
Steve King paired off against Bob Trottier and Trottier showed King why he is the lowest handicap golfer in the league. Trottier fired off a two over par 37 which could have been lower if a putt and a chip were to roll a couple more inches. King’s double bogey on 18 their second hole played was King’s first slip but King bounced back on 10 only to hiccup on 13 and Trottier’s birdie on 14 was not enough as King was able to par. Pars on 15 and King’s bogey on 16 led to a 14-6 victory by Trottier.
Jim Waterman was playing the course as Rusty Gill decided the wet weather was not fun to play in. He lucked out as Waterman’s 4 over par would have been a tough match for Gill but we look for a strong showing from Gill when they next meet. Waterman bogeyed 10, 12, 14, 17 and that great play earned him 16 points.
Rick Maloney also played the course and Rick plays so much better when under pressure of playing the course as his 5 over par earned him 16 points as well. Double bogeys on 12 and 14 and a nice birdie on 17 might have been too much for his no show Dennis Croteau.
Alan Imlach pulled away from Rich Juknavorian early as he won the first 5 holes as Juke just didn’t have enough gas to catch Imlach. Juke’s highlight was a great shot to the 11th hole as Juke won again closest to the pin. As we stood on the tee his tee shot looked close enough to where it could have been an Ace but the wet green slowed it down enough to fall short about 4-5 feet. Juke missed the birdie. Imlach cruised to a 14-6 victory.
Mr. Myrtle Beach George Vigneault faced off against George Duffield and the way the weather was and the way Vigneault played he probably wished he was still in Myrtle Beach. Vigneault jumped out to a one up lead after the 11th hole but Duffield reeled over three wins on 12, 13 and 14 only to give one back on 17 but finished strong on 18 to take a 13-7 victory.
Jim Marnie powered his way around the course with a stunning two over par 37 and drubbed Paul Comeau 16-4. Not too many players other than maybe Trottier could have beaten Marnie on this day. Marnie racked up the pars and had only two bogeys on 12 and 16. Marnie reeled off 6 straight wins and won 5 up with 4 left. Comeau salvaged his 4 points by halving 14 and 15 and winning 16 by getting a stroke.
Glenn Acciard was to square off against Sub Eric LaFrancis but LaFrancis was a no show so Erkan Duzenli and Acciard sped around the course as a two some. This match up is a prelude to next weeks match on the front nine as these two teams face off again. If they weren’t playing the course and were playing each other Acciard would have defeated Erkan 15-5. Erkan’s 49 and his play of late has not been the same play as we saw late last season. Could warmer and nicer weather be a friend to Erkan and we look to see Erkan play much better as the season progresses.
Joan Wilson subbed for Mike Berry and played Norm “The Shark” Comeau and this match went to the last hole as Comeau’s par eeked out a 12 to 8 victory. Joan continues to own the back nine par three’s as she swiped away the closest to the pin contest on 15 from McGill and it came down to the last player on 11 to take that hole away from her as well. Good job Juke. As close as this match was Joan’s triple bogey on 14 really helped seal the deal for Comeau.
Mike Landry had to give 3 strokes to newcomer D’Orio and holes 12 through 16 proved to much for Landry as D’Orio racked up 8 points through this stretch to snatch away a 14 -6 victory.
Vinny Serafino played against the course as he was supposed to play Skip “I don’t play in the rain” Gray and Vinny played close to his handicap as he was able to pull off a nice 14-6 win. A pair of bookend 8 ‘s on 10 and 18 could have been a factor if Gray had shown up to play. Could this no show hurt his team in the quest for first place? Time will tell.
In the final match of the afternoon Pelletier matched up against McGill and they started on 13 and both their tee shots found the rough across the cart path. Pelletier’s patented draw just didn’t work for him this day as McGill was able draw first blood on the par 3 15 as McGill’s birdie putt finally got him on the birdie trail. Pelletier’s poor chipping on 16 led him to 2 down against McGill but McGill found the bunker on 18 and a short chip to the green led to Pelletier bouncing back to winning 18.
McGill finally found the 3 wood and the middle of the fairway on 10 and a nice sand wedge to the pin left him with about a 6 foot up hill right to left birdie putt. Pelletier found the right rough and his approach found the beach and a poor sand shot left Pelletier 2 down with two to play. Pelletier bounced back on 11 as McGill didn’t even make it past the ladies tee on 11. McGill with a one up lead with one to play saw Pelletier’s tee shot on 12 head to the pond as the draw never got started. McGill ripped another 3 wood down the middle and his up hill par putt gave McGill his first victory of the season as he defeated Pelletier 13-7.
Joan Wilson will be subbing for McGill next week against Trottier on the front nine. McGill will be cheering for Wilson to pull the upset as Wilson will be getting 3 shots. Good Luck Joan.
Ed Miele will be subbing for Juke as well.
May the sun shine on you all next week.
