It doesn’t happen often but when it does it really sucks. George Vigneault had the low round of the day Wednesday and lost to Norm Comeau 11-9. George’s 2 over par 37 was not enough as he had to give Comeau 2 shots but Comeau’s birdie on 18 sealed the deal for Comeau. George played fantastic but for 2 short putts he could have shot even par. Comeau’s triple bogey on ten and bogey on 11 put him back on his heels but I told him not to get discouraged that there was were plenty of holes left. He must have listened…
In another great match-up Bob Trottier teed off against Norm Pelletier. In previous matches Pelletier won 13-7, 11-9 and lost 12-8. This week Trottier was too much as Pelletier couldn’t get things started as he fell behind quickly with losses on 10, 11 and 12. Pelletier wins 13 only to lose 14 and they both halve 15, 16 and 17. Trottier’s chip on 18 for birdie hit the pin and nestled next to the cup. Pelletier bogeyed and found himself getting trounced 15-5. They split the season.
Jim Marnie faced Eric La Francis this week and La Francis seems to have Marnie’s number this year as the long ball hitter has defeated Marnie 13-7 and 14-6. This started off different as Marnie jumped out quickly by winning 3 out of the first 4 holes only to see La Francis storm back to win the next three. They halved 17 but Marnie’s par on 18 was enough to earn him a split 10-10. La Francis takes the series 2 matches to 1 0 and one tie.
Erkan Duzenli struggled this week scoring wise as he faced a red hot Mike Berry. Berry and Duzenli halved holes won with 3 apiece but Berry’s consistent play the last few weeks earned him the 11-9 win. Duzenli drained an extremely long putt close to 40 feet on 12 but to his amazement Berry followed it up with a nice birdie putt of his own. We don’t see that gutsy type of clutch play too often. Duzenli couldn’t get over it as he scored a snowman on 13 and that pretty much knocked the wind out of his sails. After losing 15 and 16 Duzenli was only able to win 18. Looks like Berry is back as we have 3 weeks left before the field day.
Bob Cairns substituted for Vinny Serafino as he played Tom Hale. Tom Hale seems to be improving as Hale trips up Cairns 13-7. Hale started off 3 over after 4 holes and found himself one up as the 14th hole and 15th were set backs for Hale but Hale finished strong by going 2 over par over the last 3 holes to secure the victory.
Bill Wilson matched up against his nemesis Jay McGillicuddy and McGillicuddy didn’t disappoint Wilson as McGill tripped Wilson up 11-9 in a match-up that reminded you of two heavyweights slugging it out. There may have been no knock out punch early on but but Wilson got in a few good jabs as he stung McGill with wins on 13 and 14 but Wilson’s 12 foot putt on 15 blew past the hole by 6 feet and Wilson saw McGill tie the match. McGill’s poor approach shot on 17 found himself above the hole as a rare 3 putt allowed Wilson to tie the match. On 18 Wilson’s tee shot hooked enough to leave him a strong 3 wood away from the par 5 18th. McGill found a mogul and punched a 5 wood to within 95 yards. Wilson’s second shot was up the left side and a miscued “not Trottier like” chip shot found himself short of the green. McGill’s approach shot was a little long and left him about 15′ away with a down hill right to left putt. McGill drains the putt and Wilson can only shake his head as his birdie putt from off the green fell short. McGill sweeps their 2 matches.
Glenn Acciard continues on his torrid pace as he trounces Rick Maloney 15-5. Acciard has Maloney’s number this season as Acciard has won big 3 out of their 4 matches. Maloney’s triple bogey 7 on the 10th hole was not what one wants when starting a round especially against a red hot player like Acciard. Acciard stepped on the throttle as he took the first five holes and cruised on his way in with only losing the 16th hole. Acciard extends his league leading MVP status for the 2nd half. Acciard faces a red hot Mike Berry on the front nine next week. Who will prevail?
Rich Juknavorian squeaks by a determined Skip Gray 12-8. Juke won 4 holes and Gray captured 3. Gray started off by winning the 10th and then building his lead through 12 and 13. After halving 14 Juke stormed back to win 3 of the last 4 holes to take the victory. Juke’s birdie putt on 15 helped his cause as Gray’s par was not enough. Gray faces Tom Hale next week and Juke takes on a slipping Alan Imlach.
Steve King trips up Jim Waterman. King seems to be firing on all cylinders lately as a 3 over par 38 catapults him to 12-8 victory over Waterman. Waterman seems to be improving his play as a birdie 4 on 18 may be just what the doctor ordered. Waterman faces a determined Bill Wilson next week and King squares off against Bob Trottier. Can King be a spoiler as Trottier’s team is looking for a sweep as we close the 2nd half of the season. Trottier’s team is 15 points behind McGill’s. King has split his 2 previous matches with Trottier. This will be the rubber match.
Paul Comeau faced George Duffield and Duffield also seems to be improving as he trips Comeau up 12-8. Comeau jumped out to a one up lead but Duffield caught fire and blazed his way to 4 straight victories from 11 through 14. Comeau bounced back with wins on 15 and 16 but with each player parring 17 and 18 Comeau comes up short. Comeau takes on Marnie and Duffield faces a red hot Vigneault next week.
Dominick D’Orio and Dennis Croteau matched up this week and Croteau zoomed out to a 3 up lead only to have D’Orio win the next two holes. With a halve on 15 Croteau goes 1 over par over the last 3 holes to capture th evictory and take this match 14 -6. D’Orio needs to get back on track quickly as he tees off against Erkan Duzenli next week as Croteau matches up against Rick Maloney.
Steve Maddox teed off against Alan Imlach this week and Maddox held off Imlach by winning the 12th hole and the 16th hole by a combined 9 strokes which seems to be Imlach’s normal destruction. Imlach seems to have a hole or two where he self destructs. If he could get away from blowing up on a hole or two Imlach would be more consistent. Imlach leads the league in Triple bogeys and Others. Imlach’s handicap has jumped two points over the last few weeks. So uncharacteristic of Imlach.
