Unlikely Golfer Wins Closest to the Pin

May 8, 2009 by Jay McGillicuddy 2 Comments

As week six came to a close Rich Juknavorian wins the closest to the pin on hole 11 at Campbell’s Scottish Highlands. He hasn’t won in a couple of years but Rich hit a great ( I mean career) shot to over take a disappointed Jim Marnie. Out of 23 guys to play this hole Rich was dead last to tee off and BAM he took it away from Marnie.  Wilson wasn’t even close, missed the green completely. Congrats to Rich. Who won 15 ???

How do you score a quadruple bogey and still win the hole? Just ask Skip Gray as he dubbed his way to the par 3 15th hole only to succumb to another dubber on this hole Paul Comeau who scored an unbelievable 7 on a par 3 and he still wins the hole. Bad luck I guess.  I should be careful as I too was in the woods on the right also. YUK…

In other matches Norm Comeau found himself in another tight match with sub Soupy. Comeau jumped out to go one up after the first hole and they halved the next 3 then swapped wins on 14 and 15 and Soupy parred 18 as Comeau bogeyed.

Bob Cairns stuns Tom Hale as Cairns didn’t even need the 3 strokes Hale had to give him. Cairns’ steady play has proven too much for Hale again as Hale has dropped two matches against Cairns. When will Hale return to his old self? Mr. clutch putt.

Bill Wilson is still fuming after having to give two stokes to McGillicuddy. Wilson had a chance to open things up on 15 as McGill found the trees but a poor chip by Wilson opened the door for McGill as his chip from the trees found the mound over the green but McGill was able to get up and down from there to halve the hole. As a pissed off Wilson tries to chase Trottier off the 16th tee by trying to drive the green with a 3 wood, he barely got the ball off the ground and he found the pond way short of the green. Wilson double bogeyed 16. On 17 this foursome hooked all their tee sheets but McGill found himself in the hazard and had to take a penalty shot. Wilson bogeyed and won the hole as McGill doubled.  Again, King and Trottier hook their drives a little on 18 and Wilson’s slight draw leads Trottier to razz McGill and McGill pounds his drive to 180 yards out. Wilson is 200 yards out and his 5 iron is struck sweet and he finds himself about 20 feet to the right of the pin. Wilson eying an Eagle putt. McGill’s approach with a five iron is struck cleanly and he finds himself about 30 feet below the hole. Wilson snickers as he tells McGill his five iron was from 200 yards and McGill’s was from 180. McGill’s lag putt for Birdie is conceded and Wilson misses the Eagle and has to settle for a birdie and McGill strokes on 18 and Wilson is still pissed. I feel bad for Pelletier as he plays Wilson next week.

Bob Sasso continues his quest to be MVP as he squeaks by Glenn Acciard. Acciard makes a few mistakes that cost him on 10, 14, 17. Acciard was so determined to get home to watch the Sox, Celtics and Bruins I wonder if his head was on the golf course.

Rik Maolney’s steady play of late has moved him back into contention for MVP as he splits with the struggling Dave Murphy. Maloney’s 9 on 14 really spoiled a fine round. If he could have parred the 14th he could have shot a very nice 39. Maybe next time Rick.

Bob Trottier storms back as Steve King finally fixes his swing by making a minor adjustment in his stance.  But a missed birdie putt by King on 18 leads Trottier to 3 points. Trottier started off fine by winning 11 but King won the next 3 out of 4 holes only to falter on 17 and 18. King is back… Look out A flight.

Al Imlach continues his quest to catch the leagues leader in points Paul Comeau. Imlach’s steady play of late has allowed his team to expand on their lead to 16 points over team 4. This week Imlach has a chance to gain some ground on Comeau as they go head to head. Comeau defeated Imlach in their last match by 5 strokes. Look for Imlach to end Comeau’s winning streak.

Steve Spratt comntinues to try and find his game as he has struggled this season and Spratt is looking for his first points of the season. Could this be the week?

Norm Pelletier and JimMarnie battle for low scores of the week along with Trottier as they all shoot 37. Marnie’s two birdie’s on 10 and 13 lead him to victory as Pelletier is still shaking his head. Look for Pelletier to bounce back against Wilson next week on the front nine. I am sure Wilson will have something to say about that.

Jim Waterman runs into a buzz saw in Mike Berry. Berry shoots a very respectable 3 over 38 as Waterman is left shaking his head. Waterman’s double bogey on 18 plus bogies on 11, 12 and 16 lead to his demise.

Steve Maddox shocks the quiet Mike Landry as these two lefties battle it out through 16 but Landry’s bogey on 17 and double bogey on 18 are not enough to shake Maddox.  Look for these two to have a great battle when they meet again on June 10th.

Jack Goulet may be just coming around as he becomes more familiar with the course. Can he get back to his old self as well?

Hope you all have a great round on the 13th as I will be in DC. Hit ’em long and hit ’em straight except if you are Wilson and Pelletier who have a nice draw on most of their shots.
