Hey Bill there’s the pin

The clock at Pebble BeachThis week we saw the first re-matches from week one for most of the pairings.

In the first group Glenn Acciard paired off against Jim Waterman and this was a complete reversal of week one as Waterman pounded Acciard. This week Acciard turned the tables with some great ball striking that sort of alluded Acciard in the previous weeks. Waterman started off one up but then Acciard reeled off three of the next 4 holes to go 2 up. They halved 15-16. On 17 Waterman’s tee shot found the tall grass and Waterman made a nice recovery out of the weeds but a great par by Acciard allowed Acciard to close out Waterman. Acciard’s eagle attempt on 18 came up a little short as a 3 putt hurt his chances of breaking 40 since August 10 of last year. Is Acciard on his way back? Acciard wins big 14-6. Acciard 40 Waterman 44.

Bill “I’m playing my nemesis” Wilson teed off against Jay “My back is still sore” McGillicuddy and they did not play against each in week one. McGill and Wilson halved 10 and 11 and then McGill jumped out to a one up lead as Wilson’s approach shot and long chip fell short and McGill made an easy par. On 13 McGill’s tee shot found the drink and he re-teed his 3rd shot and found himself about 120 out and then stuck a nice wedge to with in gimmie range to salvage a nice bogey. Wilson’s drive hugged the corner and a decent chip and 2 putt halved the match. Then came the disastrous 14th as Wilson’s drive never drew and McGill’s over drew. McGill’s 3rd shot found the fairway and Wilson’s shot out of the lateral hazard went about 10′ then his 3rd shot found the tree branches and he needed to take a drop. McGill’s 4th shot from about 200 out found the bunker and his next shot stayed in the bunker. A pair of 8’s and McGill was getting a “blow” and he was not ashamed. On 16 Wilson went for it and still could not draw the ball and it went splash. Wilson doubles and McGill goes two up with 2 to play. Wilson hits a crushing tee ball down the middle and hits a decent approach but finds himself about 30 feet below the hole straight uphill. Wilson finds the bottom of the jar with a sweet birdie and McGill bogey’s. On 18 Wilson is in the middle of the fairway and McGill is on the up hill of a mogul.  Both players are on in regulation and Wilson’s birdie putt falls short and the match is lost. McGill wins 12-8 and they both shoot a respectable 41 with a quad.

Norm Pelletier squared off against George Vigneault for the first time this year and things started off great for George as Pelletier hooked both his tee shots on the 10th right into the woods. A snowman for Pelletier and who would have ever bet on that?  Is the tenth hole going to turn into the 14th for Pelletier? Vigneault makes his ho hum par and marches off to the 2nd tee where Pelletier makes a sweet birdie and Vigneault goes into the Twilight Zone with a triple bogey and Pelletier is now all square on holes and strokes. What a turn of events. Pelletier Tee box on a golf courseputs on the after burners and storms out with pars on 12 and 13. On 14 they halve the hole with pars but Vigneault is stroking and Vigneault stops the bleeding. Vigneault starts to turn it around with a nice birdie on 15 and is now even on holes. They halve 16 and Pelletier collects his second birdie on 17 to go one up with one to play. Pelletier’s length on 18 may have proved just a little too much for Vigneault as Pelletier pars and Vigneault bogeys. Vigneault was loving the greens out there these last two weeks so I am sure it was not that, that led to his downfall. LOL Pelletier slips by 12-8 Pelletier 37 Vigneault 41.

Dennis Croteau and Mike Landry dueled there way around the back nine this week and Landry made good on his bet that he could whip Croteau this time. I never heard him say that but it sounds good doesn’t it? A little fuel for the fire? Landry jumped out to a one up lead and Croteau slammed the door to bounce right back and even up the match. They halved 12 and then Landry grabbed 13 and 14 to then lose 15 to a Croteau par. Landry bounced back again to go 2 up with 2 to play and Croteau’s par on 18 was not enough as Landry was stoking and they halved the hole and Landry wins the rematch 12-8. Croteau 47 Landry 48.

Skip Gray and Tom Hale matched up for the 2nd time this year and Hale is now 2-0 against Gray. This was a lot closer than it looked if you were watching Gray on the 10th hole as he carded a perfect 10. How the heck did he do that? But, Gray did bounce back nicely with a halve on 11 and 12 and with a great par on 13 Gray was right back in this match. They halved 14 because Gray was getting a stroke and Hale could not shake Gray as Gray was basically playing lights out for a good stretch there and Hale was doing everything he could to put Gray away. They halve 15 and 16 and Gray wins 17 with a bogey and picks up three stokes and finds himself one up with one to play and down only a stroke. What a comeback for Gray. Well, it looks like I spoke to soon as a disastrous 18th hole spoiled all the fun for Gray as Hale wins this hole 6-9 and Hale wins the match 11-9. Gray 52 Hale 47.

Bob Trottier faced his nemesis for the second time this season in Steve King and King took the first match 12-8 and was looking for a beat down of the Pres. This match was oh so close as King drew first blood on the par 4 13th with a par and Trottier was now faced with turning the corner on 14 and as luck would have it there was no luck for Trottier. Trottier hooks his tee ball and stumbles his way on in with a double bogey 6 as King stays steady as usual with a par and a stroke. King now up 2 with 4 to play Trottier starts his rally with a par on 15 to cut into King’s lead by one. On 16 Trottier comes in with another par and now King is talking to himself as how could he ever let Trottier back into this match. All even with two to play. Both players bogey 17 and par 18 and King walks away with another close victory over Trottier 11-9. King 39 Trottier 40.

Golf CourseMike Berry and Eric La Francis renewed their rivalry this week and Berry trounced La Francis in week one. Will La Francis bounce back and trip Berry up? La Francis has been playing better and he started off on 10 with a nice par as Berry doubled. On 11 Berry made a great birdie and La Francis bogeyed and this match is all square. La Francis then reeled off 3 straight wins only to see his double bogey 5 on 15 turn the tide towards Berry. Berry wins 15 & 16 and finds himself one down with two to play. La Francis plays 17 & 18 one under and Berry can only go one over and loses to La Francis with the same score he beat La Francis in week one. 14-6 Berry 43 La Francis 40.

George Duffield and Erkan Duzenli teed off against each other and if history repeats itself then it won’t look good for Duzenli. Duffield has turned his game around and Duzenli seems to be struggling. Duffield was nearly flawless as he jumped out to a quick 4 up lead and on 14 the golf gods were looking out for him as I guess his tee ball looked to have gone O.B. but the golf gods kicked it back into play and Duffield made par and Duzenli was able to salvage a point.  Duffield breezed on in with even par and on 18 Duzenli finally made a par and won a hole to grab a must 2 points. Duffield finished this week as medalist with a great one over par and who could fault Duzenli when you go up against a buzz saw like Duffield. Duffield demolishes Duzenli 17-3 and takes over as the leader in the house for MVP. Duffield 36 Duzenli 45.

Alan Imlach took on Dominick D’ Orio and in week one and Imlach squeaked out a 12-8 victory. D’ Orio was no match this week for Imlach as Imlach is really struggling to find his game. D’ Orio finally came around and looks like he may have found his game as he stormed out to a 3 up lead as Imlach was able to halve 13 but dropped 14 to find himself 4 down with 4 to play. They halve 16 and Imlach wins 17 with a nifty par but collapses on 18 with a quadruple 9 and D’Orio punishes Imlach 16-4. Imlach had hopes of getting his handicap down but that does not look like it will happen any time soon. Imlach 52 D’Orio 46.

Norm Comeau vs Jim Marnie would be a great rematch of week one where we Campbells Scottish Hihlandssaw these two split 10-10. Marnie looking to improve his play and get into mid season form was chomping at the bit to take on the “Shark” Comeau. Looked like Marnie was stuck in the woods looking for golf balls on the 10th hole as he bogeyed and found himself one down to Comeau’s par. They halve 11 with doubles and Comeau went two up with another double on 12. Marnie finally woke up on 13 with a birdie 3 and then went on a par binge with pars on 14, 15, 16 and 17. On 15 Marnie’s par allowed him to go one up and they halved 16 and Marnie wins 17 and they halve 18 as Marnie crushes Comeau 17-3. Comeau 44 Marnie 41.

Ricky Maloney and Paul Comeau took each other on as they too split in week one 10-10. Paul Comeau has struggled of late and his struggles continued this week as well as Maloney went one up on the first hole and they halved 11 with doubles and then Comeau’s double bogey on 12 squared the match. Maloney came back to win 13 and regain the lead and they halve 14. Comeau wins 15 but can’t muster a win on the way in and Maloney rolls on to win huge 14-6. It looks like Comeau’s decision to go back to work and retire from retirement has hurt his game.  Maloney 47 Comeau 54.

Vinny Serafino teed off against Rich Juknavorian and Juke was looking for revenge as Serafino toppled Juke in week one 12-8. These guys halved 10 and 11 and then Juke went on a tear as he won 12 thru 15. They halved 16 and Serafino salvaged 2 points by winning 17 and grabbing 2 crucial points for his team and then Juke finished him off on 18 with a nice par. Juke joins his other two team mates with scores of 41 and Juke crushes Serafino with a 15-5 run away victory. Serafino 50 Juknavorian 41.

Weather at tee time was overcast and 63 degrees.
