When under par was the Norm

July 18, 2009 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

A big congratulation goes out to Norm Pelletier and Bob Trottier for shooting a one under par 35 on the front side tonight. Under clear blue skies and a yellow ball looming overhead these two A golfers showed us why they rank as number 2 and 3 in the league.

Trottier started off with 2 straight pars and on the 3rd tee said, after his ball rested on the green, I’ll 3 putt from there. Sure enough his wishes came true and that was his only blemish on a great round.

Norm played steady as usual as he played sub Brian Steeves who was subbing for Jim (I wish I was really playing instead of this) Marnie. Pelletier wins by 7 strokes net 3 and wins 3 holes to 2.  With birdies on 4 and 8 his only blemish was on the dogleg right 6th hole. Steeves battled hard but a double bogey on one and triple bogey on three led to Steeves demise.

How did the number one player fare this day?

Wilson pushed his drive on one down the right side in the rough and had a great second shot to within birdie range. Being superstitious he didn’t want to make birdie as he really felt it would jinx the rest of his round. He made par and proceeded to birdie 2 but after a long wait on the 3rd tee he toed his tee ball into the woods on the right and eventually tripled bogeyed. On the fifth he and Trottier both hooked their drives into the 4th fairway. After waiting for the group to tee off on 4 Wilson proceeded to drive his 3 wood off the fairway and into the tall grass leading to an uncharacteristic snowman for Wilson.

After walking off the 5th green Wilson said to McGill now we’ll play some golf. He was shaking the hee bee gee bees off. Being two holes down and three strokes down Wilson and McGill halved the 6th but Wilson bounced back on 7 and 8 to tie the match and fought back to only one stroke down. On the ninth both players missed the green and McGill parred as Wilson had about a 4 footer to salvage a point.  With Steve King’s ball just about and inch outside of Wilson’s, Trottier gave King the putt.
Wilson not seeing this turned and looked to watch King putt and noticed King’s ball mark was missing. This sent Wilson right thru the roof as he would have been able to get a great read on King’s putt. Trottier laughed and chirped your team is in first place. This sent Wilson through the stratosphere and as Wilson stood over his par putt Trottier whispered or was thinking he’s going to pull the putt. Sure enough Wilson’s putt slid left and missed the cup and the match was over. Maybe Wilson should have really tried to make that birdie putt on 1. We’ll see what happens in 2 weeks.

Jim Waterman bested Mike Berry as they played tough thru the first three holes and Berry’s 6 on 4 and 6 on the easy 8th may have contributed to his loss. Waterman noted for his great wood play had his irons working this day or was it the warm sunshine that helped loosen his muscles and lead him to a fine round of 40. Third best round of the day. Congrats Jim.

Rich Juknavorian crushed Jack Goulet as Goulet hit double digits on 5 and 6 as a 10 and a 12 really doesn’t help your game much.

Norm Comeau was playing his boss George Vigneault for the third time this year and when I saw George turn the card in I knew George had won because Norm was no where to be found.

This match looked like a great one on paper as Comeau went one up and Vigneault bounced back to take the next two holes only to give them back on 4 and 5. Vigneault tied the match on 6 and Comeau went up one on 7 then Vigneault rebounded to tie the match on 8 but as fate would have it Comeau crumbled on 9 with a double bogey 6 to succumb to his boss George. Double bogies on 2, 6 and 8 and a triple on 3 for Comeau is what really did him in. Very unusual for Norm maybe too much sun was at fault today.

Rick Maloney and Dave Murphy also had an exciting match. With Murphy 3 up and Maloney walking from the 5th green to the 6th tee you could see Maloney was dejected, as his gait was slow and his head held low.  I yelled out to him to get his attention and he was still bummed saying how lousy he was playing. Trottier yelled to him a line from the movie Animal House to get his spirits going but I am not sure Maloney heard it or understood it. Maybe it kicked in after the 6th hole as Maloney roared back to win 7,8 and 9 to salvage a point.  Never give up Ricky.

Tom Hale returned to his old self as Hale drubbed Bob Cairns by ten strokes. Cairn’s 11 on the 5th and a double on 8 and a triple bogey on 9 didn’t help Cairns at all.

Steve Maddox showed us how not to give up also as he was 2 down through 4 but bounced back on 5 and 6 and to halve the match. On the7th Maddox and his playing partners couldn’t believe their eyes as Maddox’s tee shot on this par 3 caromed off the golf cart path and slid along the ridge of this two tiered green and looped around the green to slide down the hill and rest a few feet from the hole just missing a hole in one by inches. With the birdie tap in Maddox sealed the deal, as Landry couldn’t pull this match out on 8 or 9.   With two lefties in that group it must have been fun.

Accaird and Sasso hacked their way around the front nine in an uncharacteristic way for these two. Acciard went 3 up with 4 to play. Sasso bounced back to win 6 and 7 but an untimely bogey on 8 couldn’t help even though Acciard had a snow man on 9. Sasso went down 3-1. Sasso just doesn’t seem to be playing like the old Sasso played. Hopefully he will get back to his winning ways for the championship in late August.

Steve Spratt played the course tonight and took all 4 points. Unfortunately or fortunately he will be in Italy next week and Ed English is due to sub for him. Have fun in Italy Steve.

Paul Comeau played the course also and an untimely 11 on the par 5 2nd hole and a 10 on the par 5 5th was enough to doom him to win only two points. Not sure why Skip Gray didn’t show because it was such a beautiful day.

Ed Miele subbing for a handicap shot 55 with holes 4 and 5 yielding a 10 and a 9.  And the triple bogey on 9 didn’t help at all.

Next week we play the back nine and let’s hope the weather holds out and we have just as nice a day as we had today.
