A great day for golf

The Oaks Golf Course Hole #10

The Oaks Golf Course Hole #10

Another beautiful day at the golf course Wednesday and we had all 24 guys present for the first time this year.

In a match that featured Erkan Duzenli and  Jack Goulet neither player halved a hole. It was Duzenli that jumped out to a quick 3 up lead only to see it evaporate on the next three holes as Goulet battled back to halve the match on 15. Sixteen and Seventeen proved too much for Goulet as he double bogeyed them and Duzenli parred to close Goulet out on 17. Goulet didn’t quit as he parred 18 and took the final hole but it wasn’t enough. Duzenli had to give 6 shots and he won by 6 shots. Handicaps sometimes work.

Vigneault squared off against Berry for the first time this year in what was billed as a classic duel of two titans.  Vigneault’s smooth swing and plenty of practice this past week led him to a perfect round of even par. Berry didn’t start off too well as he found himself on the 13th hole side of things while playing the opening hole 10th.  Then a missed approach shot found Berry punching out of the woods, Berry doubled the opening hole to go one down. Alan Imlach the “Greatest Putter in the World”

May 24, 2010 by Jay McGillicuddy 1 Comment

Pebble Beach ClockIt was a dogfight Alan didn’t expect to be in. See, Alan has been playing decent golf lately and giving three strokes to Jack Goulet on Wednesday didn’t faze him a bit. Little did he know he would find himself 3 stokes down and 2 holes down by the time he turned the corner on 14. With a slip by Goulet on 14 Imlach found himself now one hole down and even on strokes. Imlach bounced back and won 16 and 17 and wanting to get 4 points he needed a miraculous putt on 18 to halve the hole and take all 4. Well, Imlach called it as he lined up his putt and muttered right before he pulled the trigger I am going to make this as I am the greatest putter in the world or words to that effect. LOL as the putt neared the hole it fell to the bottom of the jar and Imlach laughed his way back to the clubhouse. He called it. Congrats Alan. [Read more…]

Week 3 a few more low numbers

April 24, 2010 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

1st and 13th hole72 degrees was the norm today with a slight breeze which didn’t hamper us too much. The course was a little damp in places but we still played lift clean and place in our own fairway.

Jim Marnie took on undefeated Bob ‘I am not complaining about my achillies” Trottier and Marnie won the first 2 out of 3 holes even par and Trottier went 3 over on those same holes. When you see this you know Trottier is not on his game. Marnie smelled this and put the hammer down as he lost 4 and 6 but was able to recapture 5 and 9 to win 4 to 2 and he won by 4 strokes and he was getting one. Trottier will bounce back and get back to his winning ways.

Week 2 another banner day

12th hole

12th hole at Campbells Scottish Highlands

Week two was another great week with the temps about 20 degrees cooler than week one. This week we teed off on the back nine and we saw a few low numbers.

In the A flight El Presidento was playing the Master and when El Presidento is on not too many people can beat him. You just can’t make a mistake. This week Wilson’s biggest mistakes came on 11 & 12. Wilson’s putter went bye bye. He never brought it, so to speak. The 4 putt on 11 nailed the coffin shut. Although the double bogey on 12 didn’t help much either. For Wilson 6 over on the back nine is unacceptable. Lucky me, I get him on the back nine next Wednesday. I just hope my game is a s good as it was on week 3.

Jim Waterman continued his strong play as he tripped up sub Dave Murphy by 5 strokes and he had to give him 4. Just enough to put him away. Murphy faulted on the tough par 5 18th as the wind was in our face pretty much the whole way up the hole.

Three weeks in and awesome weather every week

April 22, 2010 by Jay McGillicuddy 2 Comments

Balsams We started this season off on April 7th and the weather was spectacular. 87 degrees when I arrived at the course around 3:00PM and the sun was a blazing with a mild breeze out of the Southwest.

There were some great matches on week one and nobody broke 40 which is rare.

We were introduced to a few new players this year and one of them I got to play with in his group was Rusty Gill who took on the master Bill Wilson.

Rusty comes from India and is a Long Drive specialist. I have seen many Long Drive contests on TV but have never really played with anyone that participates in the contest. A lot of people say these type of gofers can crush the ball but can’t chip, putt or hit an approach shot. Rusty sure does prove them wrong. He had a great match with Wilson and he can crush a golf ball. We all know there are a few long hitters in the league but off the tee no one is as long as Rusty was on week one in all the years I have played in the Wilderness league. Wilson squeaked out a win due to Gill’s long drive that went a stray on 9 and ended up on the driveway leading in to the course. [Read more…]

Wilderness Golf League starts it’s 2010 season

March 4, 2010 by Jay McGillicuddy 3 Comments

Bill Wilson number one teeThe Wilderness Golf League met for the first time this season at Park Place Lanes in Salem, NH in preparation of the upcoming golf season at Campbell’s Scottish Highlands Golf Course.

President Bob Trottier opened up the meeting a little after 7:00 PM and we had 17 total players out of 24 show up. We lost three players this year Jim Murphy, Bob Cairns and Bob Sasso. They will be replaced by Dennis Croteau and Jim Zahareas and Rusty Gill.

Paul Comeau will be adding a few of the new rule changes to the league’s rules document that we will send out as soon as possible.

Looks like we tee off at 4:00PM on April 7th weather permitting.
I have a feeling we are in for a drier season than we have been used to the last few years. Expect to see cooler temps this season as well with some hot days in early to mid June, late July and early to mid August.

See you all on the 7th of April and enjoy the season.
