Mid Year Field Day at Hickory Hill

June 24, 2012 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

Hickory Hill Golf ClubOur mid-year field day was held today and we had a great showing maybe playing on a Saturday may have been the reason. We were missing a few great players , Norm Pelletier, Erkan Duzenli and Rich Juknavorian. After a few days in the mid to high 90’s today’s forecast was a welcome relief. I saw temps to be about 78 and sunny with a possible chance of showers late in the afternoon. By the time we teed off at 10:35 it was sunny and temps were warming up. [Read more…]

In the heat of the night

June 22, 2012 by Jay McGillicuddy 7 Comments

It doesn’t get much hotter than this too often, thank goodness. It was brutal out there last night and I commend all those that walked the course. I was beat and I rode so I can imagine how you all felt. HOT HOT HOT. My vehicle thermometer reached 100 just before I got to the course. [Read more…]

Winners Never Quit and Quitters Never Win

The putting greenThis week was the start of the second half and it was an overcast day with rain showers ending just before we teed off and the temps were hovering in the high 60’s. We were hoping for no rain and we lucked out. [Read more…]

When 8 is not enough!

June 9, 2012 by Jay McGillicuddy 2 Comments

Another great finish under the new scoring system this season saw two teams battling it out with the best team winning. We also saw two more teams make a valiant effort to chase the front-runners. Congratulations to Team 2 Trottier, Berry, Duffield and Imlach. First Half Champs. Congrats to Tom Hale as 1st Half MVP.

The Week That Was

June 3, 2012 by Jay McGillicuddy 2 Comments

This week’s featured match saw Jim Marnie take on Eric La Francis. Marnie opened things up nicely with a birdie on the opening hole to go one up.  But, that didn’t last long as a bogey 4 on the 11th saw La Francis halve the match. Marnie grabbed the 12th with a bogey and then Marnie’s golf game crapped out on him as he literally hooked his tee shot through the wooden bridge on the 13th and it didn’t even hit the bridge. His ball nestled close to the hazard but a crappy 2nd shot found it’s way on the other side of the hazard and he needed to take a drop. I could go on and point out every shot but I would run out of room. Needless to say Marnie lost the hole and the match was tied. Marnie bounced right back with a bogey on 14 to go one up but is now down only 4 strokes. La Francis wins 15 and they halve 16 and 17. On 18 the long ball hitting La Francis finds himself in the right rough but only about 165-170 out and Marnie finds the mogul. Marnie chops it out and still finds himself a ways a way and La Francis reaches in two but his ball rests down in the back left corner of the green.   Could have been an eagle if the pin was down there. Marnie’s 3rd shot hit the hill next to the right side trap and it slowed it down enough to leave him with about a ten-foot putt for birdie. La Francis was a mile away and putted to within 3 feet to gain a gimmie from Marnie.  Marnie with nerves of steel drained the putt and salvaged a much-needed point for his team. La Francis wins 11-9. La Francis 40 Marnie 45.

Wednesday will tell it all

June 2, 2012 by Jay McGillicuddy 2 Comments

Yes, we have now come to the final week of the first half of the 2012 Wilderness Golf season and who will capture first place?

First we should give credit to Norm “Shark” Comeau for urging us to change the scoring system we were stuck in for the last 20 years. Our new system has really brought us some exciting matches for team standings and MVP races. “Every shot counts is our new motto.” [Read more…]

The race gets even tighter

May 25, 2012 by Jay McGillicuddy 2 Comments

Putting greenWhat a great week this was as all 6 teams remain in the hunt. The difference from 1st to 6th is only 30 points and with 2 weeks remaining it is anyone’s guess as to who will win the first half. [Read more…]

Hey Bill there’s the pin

May 12, 2012 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

The clock at Pebble BeachThis week we saw the first re-matches from week one for most of the pairings.

In the first group Glenn Acciard paired off against Jim Waterman and this was a complete reversal of week one as Waterman pounded Acciard. This week Acciard turned the tables with some great ball striking that sort of alluded Acciard in the previous weeks. Waterman started off one up but then Acciard reeled off three of the next 4 holes to go 2 up. They halved 15-16. On 17 Waterman’s tee shot found the tall grass and Waterman made a nice recovery out of the weeds but a great par by Acciard allowed Acciard to close out Waterman. Acciard’s eagle attempt on 18 came up a little short as a 3 putt hurt his chances of breaking 40 since August 10 of last year. Is Acciard on his way back? Acciard wins big 14-6. Acciard 40 Waterman 44. [Read more…]

The Race for First Tightens.

May 5, 2012 by Jay McGillicuddy 5 Comments

Team 1 took on Team 4 as we ended the first cycle of matches this half of the season. Norm “My game is coming around”Pelletier  took on Steve “I am waiting for warmer weather” King. Pelletier and King fought tooth and nail thru 3 holes and then on the par 4 4th Pelletier’s steady par allowed him to jump out to a one up lead only to see King bounce right back on the par 5 5th. Pelletier took control again on 6 and he and King halved 7 and 8. With Pelletier dormied Pelletier closed out the match with a nice par finish. Pelletier wins going away 13-7. Pelletier 38 King 43. When The Night Comes Falling

April 29, 2012 by Jay McGillicuddy 2 Comments

1st and 13th holeSome things just never change do they? Our 4th week has always been challenging to get the last few groups in from the setting sun. This year was no exception as the last two groups finished in darkness. Many years ago I remember I was in a group with the lights on and it almost seemed to hinder what I could see. Does it really help? What do you think? Let us know.
