Team 1 took on Team 4 as we ended the first cycle of matches this half of the season. Norm “My game is coming around”Pelletier took on Steve “I am waiting for warmer weather” King. Pelletier and King fought tooth and nail thru 3 holes and then on the par 4 4th Pelletier’s steady par allowed him to jump out to a one up lead only to see King bounce right back on the par 5 5th. Pelletier took control again on 6 and he and King halved 7 and 8. With Pelletier dormied Pelletier closed out the match with a nice par finish. Pelletier wins going away 13-7. Pelletier 38 King 43. Some things just never change do they? Our 4th week has always been challenging to get the last few groups in from the setting sun. This year was no exception as the last two groups finished in darkness. Many years ago I remember I was in a group with the lights on and it almost seemed to hinder what I could see. Wednesday April 25th will be the start of the long rounds and the back ups on the third tee. In order for us to have all our groups finish before darkness sets on us we need for all our groups to play quickly. “Ready Golf” is what is needed. No waiting for the person behind you to get ready etc… Just get up and hit the ball. Every second counts this week. If it’s cloudy it will be even worse. So play quickly and let’s hope the league in front of us plays quickly as well. But, don’t count on it. [Read more…]
The days are getting longer

The number one and two golfers teed off against each other and President Bob Trottier played a flawless round as he shot a perfect 36. No bogies and no birdies, all pars which is very rare. I’ll bet he would have liked to play all 18 instead of 9. Great job Bob.
Norm Pelletier also played extremely well but he started off with a bogey and a bogey on 5 and 8 were his only flaws. Trottier wins big 14-6. Number 2 beats number 1. Teeing off in the last group maybe good for Trottier.
The wind played havoc on the Wilderness

The 2012 Wilderness Golf League is in full swing and there were really no surprises coming out of week one.
Campbell’s Scottish Highland Golf Course was in good condition and with the weather being dry it was nice not to slosh around the course for once on opening week. I was surprised at all the ball marks on the greens that were not repaired and they only opened the course on March 30th. This is something they should monitor.

Championship Sunday

Congratulations to Team Wilson, Vigneault, Maloney and Juknavorian as they win the second half championship by one point. They will face the same team they played ending the season, Team Trottier, Marnie, Duzenli and Serafino for the Grand Championship.
This week was awful close as we all hung around the 19th hole to see what the final pairing of Maloney vs Duzenli would bring in. Well to a big surprise by everyone it was awful close. Going into the final week team Wilson was up by two points and McGill’s team was nipping at their heels.
Wilson played even up against Trottier and Trottier wins going away 14-6. Trottier has played a lot of golf this year and has played fairly well to boot. Wilson has only played sparingly and will the long layoff from playing week to week hamper his efforts tomorrow.
George Vigneault playing great golf this year tripped up Jim Marnie 11-9. Marnie had a double bogey on the 12th and 14th hole and a quadruple bogey on the 15th hole was Marnie’s demise. Vigneault is a machine.
Rich Juknavorian took on Vinny Serafino and Juke leading the MVP honors for the 2nd half needed to play well as Acciard was right behind him wanting to take it away from Juke. Juke just did not play well and Serafino cruised 14-6. Sorry Juke there will always be next year.
We all were hanging around the 19th hole waiting patiently for Rick Maloney and Erkan Duzenli to finish their match. Rumors floated around that Maloney was playing great and won 13-7. When Erkan came in and Maloney was all smiles I knew it wasn’t good. Sure enough Maloney won 13-7 and our team lost by one point. Congrats to Team Wilson for an exciting finish to an exciting year.
So, tomorrow September 18th Team Wilson will face Team Trottier for the 2011 Wilderness Championship. With our new scoring system this all these 18 hole matches will be close.
The weather will be chilly and this match is too close to call. May the best team win.

When 32 = 33.

I am sure you think 32 is lower than 33. We were all taught that in elementary school right? Well, when it comes to playing golf it is all in relation to par. Yesterday, Norm Pelletier shot the lowest score in league history with a 32 or was it? His round was awesome and I hope you don’t think we are trying to take anything away from him but his score was actually three under par and there has been one other player in the league that has done the same, Bill Wilson shot 33 on the front side which has a par 36 which also equals 3 under par on July 9, 2008. Other notables for 33’s are Tom Hale at Pine Valley back in 1992 or 1993, Bob Trottier on 6/16/2010 and Jim Waterman on 8/18/2010 all on the back nine with a par 35. Congrats to all the great low scores. So is 32 the lowest score?
With one week left in this years regular season we see Team Wilson, Vigneault, Maloney and Juknavorian on top of the leader board by 2 points over Team McGillicuddy, Comeau, Acciard and Gray for the 2nd half championship and the right to play the first half champs from Team Trottier, Marnie, Duzenli and Landry/Serafino.
The Cream rises to the top with Sneakers on

As the saying goes “cream rises to the top” and that is just what team 3 did, almost. Norm Pelletier, Eric La Francis, Mike Berry and Tom Hale surged toward the top of the leader board with a resounding victory over team 5 of Jay McGillicuddy, Norm Comeau, Glenn Acciard and Skip Gray, with the largest margin of victory by one team under our new scoring system. Pelletier’s team throttled the first place team by 40 points to catapult them to within 5 points of the league lead.

This match was basically over before it started. Pelletier shot a one under par 35 against McGillicuddy on the front nine in their last match-up and followed up this week’s match with an even par 36. One under par against McGill in two matches is pretty impressive by any stretch of the imagination. McGill must bring the best out of Pelletier because Pelletier seems to play his best when playing McGill.
Pelletier reeled off 4 straight pars as McGill could only muster bogeys. Pelletier’s birdie 4 on the 5th brought back visions of their previous match. Pelletier’s 3 putt on 7 was his only blemish and a too strong birdie putt on 8 could have resulted in another under par round for Pelletier. Pelletier’s masterful performance was just the tip of the iceberg for his team. Pelletier wins convincingly 16-4.
When you win but lose

It doesn’t happen often but when it does it really sucks. George Vigneault had the low round of the day Wednesday and lost to Norm Comeau 11-9. George’s 2 over par 37 was not enough as he had to give Comeau 2 shots but Comeau’s birdie on 18 sealed the deal for Comeau. George played fantastic but for 2 short putts he could have shot even par. Comeau’s triple bogey on ten and bogey on 11 put him back on his heels but I told him not to get discouraged that there was were plenty of holes left. He must have listened…
In another great match-up Bob Trottier teed off against Norm Pelletier. In previous matches Pelletier won 13-7, 11-9 and lost 12-8. This week Trottier was too much as Pelletier couldn’t get things started as he fell behind quickly with losses on 10, 11 and 12. Pelletier wins 13 only to lose 14 and they both halve 15, 16 and 17. Trottier’s chip on 18 for birdie hit the pin and nestled next to the cup. Pelletier bogeyed and found himself getting trounced 15-5. They split the season. [Read more…]
