The weather cooperated

July 29, 2011 by Jay McGillicuddy 2 Comments

Steve KingWell it was about time we had a great day, weather-wise. We teed off early and everyone finished in the daylight. Of course we would expect too it’s still July.

In first place Team Wilson, Vigneault, Maloney and Juknavorian teed off against first half champs Trottier, Marnie, Duzenli and Serafino. In the first matchup Wilson faed off against Trottier and Trottier kept his status as the #1 player in the league as he jumped all over Wilson early on by starting the round with a birdie and a par. Wilson answered right back by taking the par 3 third with a bogey and then Wilson gave it right back on 4 with a bogey 5.  Wilson came storming back to tie the match thru 6 holes but his wheels fell of and Trottier went one under for the final 3 holes to take a commanding 14-6 win.

Jim Marnie tackled George Vigneault and when it comes to playing quickly and not wasting time you can always look to Marnie to keep you moving. Marnie coming off a poor showing last week by his standards started off with 4 straight pars to put Vigneault back on his heels. The two of them halved 5 and 6 and Vigneault grabbed the 7th and Vigneault ran out of holes as they both halved 8 and 9. Marnie seemed to have gotten his drive back in order and was swinging with authority and Vigneault just didn’t have that normal swagger that he usually carries. Marnie cruises 14-6.

Duzenli vs Maloney in what is usually a great match. Maloney jumped out strong by winning the first 3 holes and Duzenli grabbed 4. Maloney stormed back to win 5 and took closest to on 7 with a sweet birdie 2. Duzenli wins 8 but it’s to late and Maloney stomps Duzenli 14-6.

Serafino squared off against Juknavorian and this match was pretty even as they halved one and two and Juke broke through on 3 and Serafino captured the 4th, 5th and 6th but Juke came roaring back to take 7 & 8. Juke squeezes out an 11 to 9 victory to stay within 2 points of 2nd half league leading MVP Glenn Acciard.

Norm Pelletier got back on track as he took on Steve King and King’s card was easy to read as he carded 6 straight 5’s and 3 4’s on his way to 6 over 42. King fell short as Pelletier was thirsty as he and Wilson playing in the same foursome with Trottier won the beer match. Pelletier’s 2 over par 38 was his best performance since his one under 35 two weeks ago.

Long ball hitter Eric La Francis took on Paul Comeau and Comeau jumped out to a one up lead after 2. La Francis bounced back by taking 3 and 6 but Comeau gutted it out by parring 9 to take a well deserved split. 10-10. This may have been a tough match for La Francis but he was smiling all the way to the bank as he took closest to on the 3rd hole.

Mike Berry had to play lights out as he took on rookie Dominick D’ Orio and when you have to give 6 strokes it’s tough to win. Berry played great and shot a five over 41 but D’ Orio after being 2 down thru 4 holes stormed back to win 5 &  6 and then they both halved 7 & 8 and Berry grabbed 9 to salvage a halve. 10-10.

Tom Hale having his best round since May 11 took on Steve Maddox who had to give Hale a stroke and Hale took advantage of it as he was able to halve the 5th and a hiccup on the 6th hole let Maddox back in the round. Hale wins the 8th hole with only his 10th par this season but Maddox spoils things for Hale by capturing the 9th. Hale wins 11-9 and we all hope Hale can build on this win.

McGill took on Waterman and after they halved the first hole McGill played three great shots into two as Waterman told McGill to leave his putter in the bag as McGill played a chip shot that would have made Trottier proud. With another great drive by McGill on 4 and Waterman struggling, McGill grabbed this hole to go 2 up. As we headed down the 5th Waterman had a great drive on the right side as McGill was on the left. McGill was about 237 yds and went in with a 5 wood and thinking his ball went to the left side of the fairway/rough they all wandered over there to help find his ball but lo and behold Marnie found his ball in the trap on the right side. McGill and Vigneault need their eyes checked but the sun was pretty bright as well. Waterman snuck back in with a win on 5 but gave it right back with a triple bogey on 6 and a bogey on 7 let McGill clinch at least a tie. McGill lost 8 and won 9 to walk away with a 14-6 victory.

Norm Comeau faced George Duffield and Comeau took a commanding 3 up lead after 3 but Duffield chipped away on 4 and 5 but after halving 6 Comeau grabbed holes 7 and 8 to walk away with a nice 14-6 victory. Comeau finds himself just 10 points out of first place behind teammate Glenn Acciard. Will Comeau be rooting for Acciard down the stretch?

Acciard vs Croteau straight up and Acciard continues to play well as he scores points on every hole this week to throttle Croteau 15-5. Croteau never seemed to get on track as Acciard’s 6 over par was too much for Croteau as Croteaus’s first par came on the 6th hole and having only one par for the day just won’t get you many points. Acciard recaptures 2nd half MVP honors through 5 weeks. Who can catch Acciard?

Alan Imlach coming off a disastrous 67 last week bounced back by improving his score by 15 shots against Skip Gray. Gray jumped out to a one up lead after 2 but Imlach grabbed holes 3 and 4 with Gray stealing 5 and 6 to gain a one up advantage but Imlach’s par on 8 was enough to square the match and Imlach walked off with an 11-9 victory.

and his “dollar swapping friend” Jim Waterman to keep you on your toes. You can’t turn away for a second and chit chat with someone without disturbing Marnie or Waterman swing. They play that quickly.

Slow as Slow can be.

July 21, 2011 by Jay McGillicuddy 4 Comments

July 13, 2011

It was an overcast hot and humid afternoon and all looked good as we teed off early again for the second straight week. But, it was so slow out there that I fell asleep typing up all the stories.

Week of July 20th,

This week we had great weather… if you like hot and humid. At least it didn’t rain.

We had a few close matches and the top three teams remained close to the hunt.

We had four players scoring in the 30’s this week as Bill Wilson led all scorers with a scorching 36, even though he wrote down 37. We forgive you Bill. Can you say DQ? Next was Bob Trottier whose 37 wasn’t enough as McGill’s handicap helped propel him to victory with an impressive 38. Steve King who finally got over being on vacation and King shot a great 39 for not having played for 2 weeks.

Going to Disney World

July 7, 2011 by Jay McGillicuddy 1 Comment

Yes, I guess if you go out and fire a one over par 36 you get to go to Disney World. Congratulations to Steve King for a great round and he gets to go on vacation to a great destination. He’ll probably have more fun than his kids. I know I would. I love going there. Do you?

Jim Waterman faced King last night and with the temps hovering around 91 degrees it looked like King was red hot. Just remember for the future King loves playing in the sweltering heat. King’s only hiccup came on the 13th where he took a double bogey 6 and Waterman’s bogey 5 won him his only hole. King was just too much for Waterman.

Mike Berry finally decided to get his game back in order as he pummeled Erkan Duzenli 16-4. Some of us kidded with Berry as he came in after his round and he announced he had shot a 40. We blurted out that he needed to go out and finish the last two holes. It was pretty funny!. Mike has always been a formidable opponent and it is nice to see him get his game back. Duzenli tripped up on the 10th, 12th and 14th and just couldn’t get his game going as Berry was also red hot.

George Vigneault vs Norm “The Shark” Comeau. In this match as in most matches against each other it was close. Both players started off par par and then Comeau drew first blood as his bogey on 12 took this hole. Vigneault bounced back on 13 with a par and then Comeau getting a stroke on 14 was able to capture that hole and go one up. They matched scores all the way thru to 17 when Comeau’s double bogey on 18 allowed Vigneault back in the match and Vigneault walked away with an 11-9 victory. These two always play each other tough.

In a re-match of a couple of weeks ago Glenn Acciard crushed Rick Maloney again but by a little less of a margin than he won by two weeks ago. Acciard literally got out if his truck and walked to the tee to start his round. Due to the hot weather and hardly anyone at the course the league in front of us started early so therefore we started early as well. Acciard should think about arriving and jumping out to tee off more often as he fired a 4 over par 39 and Maloney struggled on 10, 12 and 13 and could only muster 2 pars and he won only one hole and halved one. Acciard wins big again for the third straight week 17-3.

Sub Ed Miele filling in for Dominick “I’m on vacation golfing” D’Orio faced a red hot Dennis Croteau who actually finally played golf instead of mentally being on vacation. Miele started off horribly with an Al Imlach 11 on the 10th hole. Croteau’s triple bogey was enough to win this hole and then Crouteau went on a tear as he shot one over par the rest of the way in. Miele ran into a buzz saw like he never saw before, welcome back Dennis, nice job. Miele will be subbing for Steve King next week and he will face the number one golfer in the league Bob Trottier. Best of Luck Ed… I guess Butch Hembree will be subbing instead, sorry Ed.

In another well played match Al Imlach bounced back nicely after last weeks debacle against a tough opponent in Steve Maddox. Maddox jumped out to a one up lead after one and then Imlach’s first birdie of the year on the tricky 12th hole, “just ask Bob Trottier” squared the match up. Maddox stuck in a victory on 13 and then they each halved the next 3 holes when Imlach’s bogey on 17 squared the match up. With Maddox getting a stroke on 18 he was able to halve the hole and Maddox went down 9-11 against a much improved Imlach.

Jim Marnie squared off against Eric La Francis and Marnie was struck with the “Number of the Beast” Marnie started off 6,6,6. This start for Marnie is very uncharacteristic but he was able to bounce back by winning 2 of the next 4 holes. But, with La Francis being able to hit the long ball, La Francis captured 17 with a nice birdie to close out Marnie. Then La Francis wanted to add icing to the cake and proceeded to launch his drive on 18 to the 100 yard marker. The only other golfers I know of are Acciard and Gill that have come just as close as La Francis. La Francis missed the eagle and had to settle for his birdie. La Francis takes this match big 14-6.

Paul Comeau and George Duffield battled their way around the back nine playing with Bill Wilson and Jay McGillicuddy. Comeau and Duffield had honors as they were first to sign up and they never relinquished honors. Comeau played steady and Duffield seemed to struggle as he faltered on 13 by driving his tee shot into the water. Comeau went on to win 14 as well with a very nice par. With Comeau getting a stroke on 16 Comeau’s smooth par was good enough to get him to 2 up with two to play. Pars on 17 by both players clinched it for Comeau as Duffield’s wayward tee shot on 18 sealed the deal for Comeau. Comeau wins big 14-6.

Vinny Serafino vs Tom Hale and Serafino bounces back after a lackluster round last week to defeat Hale 14-6. Hale again seems to struggle as he lost 4 of the first 5 holes in their match but was able to par 15 and 17 but that was not enough. What has happened to Hale’s game???

Rich Juknavorian played the course as Skip Gray was unable to get a sub. Juke needing a 45 to grab the maximum points allowed for playing the course tripped up as he stumbled on 12, 13 and 14 and with an unprecedented 7 on 15 and a double on 17 took him out of the money. He was hoping Skip could have played as it is always better to play against someone. Except if you are Waterman….

In the Featured match of the week we saw # 1 Bob Trottier tee it up against # 2 Norm Pelletier. Trottier jumped out to a one up lead on 10 and Trottier saw that dwindle away quickly as he bogeyed 11 and then had a Giant hiccup on 12 with a very not too friendly 8. Trottier found himself 2 down after 14 as Pelletier’s bogey and getting a stroke on the hole was enough to move him ahead. Both players halved 15 with pars and then Trottier got one back on 16 with par and they halved 17. On 18 Trottier’s league leading birdie was able to square the match but Trottier ended up losing over all strokes and this match ended up Pelletier slipping by Trottier 11-9.

In the finale we saw Jay McGillicuddy match up with Bill “I never tie my golf shoes” Wilson. Wilson’s tee shot on ten ended up in the weeds, but a decent recovery left him short of the trap and his chip shot carried to the back of the green and rolled off. A double bogey 6 was just short of McGill’s 3 putt bogey. The greens had just been punched and topped dressed with sand. They were slow.
McGill and Wilson both halved 11 with 3 putts, go figure. Then on 12 neither McGill or Wilson seemed to want to win this hole as it had the Trottier jinx written all over it. Too bad we were the first group to go through this hole. Sorry Bob… Wilson carded an 8 and McGill “I can’t hit a Hybrid” tripled bogeyed.

Each player struggled until Wilson’s tee shot on 14 was a Wilson classic as he drew the ball around the corner and it rested just near the 150 marker. When you struggle you really struggle as Wilson’s approach shot shanked into woods on the right side of the cart path. After finding his ball underneath a fern Wilson got it out of the hazard and launched it clear across the other side of the green, pin high, a 6 was not a winner. As both players squandered opportunity after opportunity Wilson finally broke through and won a hole as he parred 18. McGill’s tee shot went OB and his 3rd shot was the best hit of the day for McGill as he rested it in the middle of the 18th fairway 168 yds out. A double bogey 7 was enough for Wilson to salvage 4 points. McGill wins this one 16-4. Look for Wilson to bounce back big time when they meet again on August 10th.

Sunshine for all

July 5, 2011 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

Yes, the sun came out and Bill Wilson returned to duty. It was a grand day at the golf course. Rusty Gill will be missed but hopefully we will see him in the not too distant future. We all hope he is doing well in India spanking the crap out of the golf ball over there.

Wilson dusted off his sticks and made his way to the first tee and with out a hitch drove the ball down the middle of the fairway leaving his combatant Norm Pelletier in awe. Wilson dropped the first two holes as he tried to get the rust off that pure swing of his. A draw is usually in order. An extremely well played tee shot on the par three 3rd nearly went in the cup in a fly but it was a tad long. It held up closest too until Bob “I’ll write Mike Landry’s name down” Trottier stole it away and shattered Wilson’s comeback.
Pelletier parred 4 and then let Wilson get back into to the game by double bogeying the par 5 fifth and that was all Wilson needed as he went 1 under par the rest of the way in. A job well done from the King of the Wilderness League. He faces off against his nemesis McGill next week on the back nine.

McGill faced his nemesis this week as Steve King stung McGill again and racked up 14 points this time to go along with his 16 in their first meeting. McGill took their May 25th meeting 11-9.
King’s layoff of not being able to play in the downpour must have helped his game tonight as he was pretty smooth as usual and jumped out to a quick 3 up lead after 4 holes. McGill tried to bounce back but King stroked on the par 5 fifth and McGill quickly went downhill after that with a snowman on 6 and bogeys on 7 and 9. King played like his name this week.

Marnie vs. Duffield turned out to be the slug-fest of the week as they matched stroke for stroke for the first 4 holes and then Marnie drew first blood on the 5th hole but Duffield countered back with a nice par on 6 and then they exchanged 4 and 5’s on 7 and 8 to only split the 9th with bogeys. Marnie 10 Duffield 10. This is Marnie’s 3rd time he has battled to a 10 10 tie. He is one tough competitor even when he is in the woods fishing for golf balls. He is sure to find one you will like, he is very generous.

Duzenli vs. Croteau was another close match as Duzenli staved off Croteau’s middle of the round charge on holes 4-5. Croteau found himself 2 down thru 3 but crawled back into it with wins on 4 and 5 but only to falter on the 6th and that was all Duzenli needed as he matched stroke for stoke on the way in and took this match 12-8. Duzenli leads the league in Bogeys with 54 which is 9 ahead of Marnie. Duzenli looks like he is coming around and playing like he finished last year. Croteau needs to come back from vacation.

In the match to see who could get the highest score Imlach took the honors this day as his 61 won by 3. The last time Imlach shot in the 60’s was back in 2009. Imlach started off with an 11 on hole number one which in it’s own right is pretty difficult to do. He must have been amazed at knowing Wilson was back and just wanted to sip a cold one with him after the round because he surely didn’t want to play golf.
Serafino held his own winning the first 3 out of 4 holes then he let Imlach slip one in on the 8th as Serafino’s 10 didn’t really hurt him as he was getting 4 strokes and with Imlach’s par that still wasn’t enough for Imlach to catch up. Chalk this match up for the archives, let it go…

Ok, so we also saw a few massacres out on the course this past week as Acciard throttled newcomer D’Orio. D’Orio is thanful he is on vacation this week as Acciard scored a point on every hole for the 2nd week in a row, acciard is 36-4 the past two weeks. Who will shut him down? Keep it up Glenn…

Juknavorian pummeled Tom ” I think I forgot how to play golf” Hale 17-3 as Hale was heard muttering around the course I wish it would rain. Tom’s game is no where to be found. So, if you happen to see it please let Tommy know for goodness sakes. Tom was one of the top players in this league just a few years ago. Tom will bounce back as we all are cheering for him. (cough) (cough)

In the 3rd of this weeks slaughter rounds we saw Mr. “I am so glad I got my golf clubs adjusted” Trottier put a whole lot of hurt on Waternman as Waterman just wasn’t himself. Waterman never won a hole and when you shoot 13 over and your opponent shoots 3 over there tells the story.

Vigneault vs. La Francis was a close match if you were looking at it on paper but this week Vigneault showed the long ball hitter that distance isn’t everything. Being long is great but hitting fairways and greens in regulation will keep your scores down as Vigneault fired a 4 over par 40 to trip up La Francis 13-7. What impresses me is that this round was played on the front nine which ordinarily would favor La Francis. Great job George.

Ricky Maloney always threatening for MVP showed us again why he does so well under pressure. Maloney survived Berry’s comeback bid by crushing Berry on the way in as he clobbered Berry on holes 6, 8 and 9. No stopping Maloney this week as he faced the wrath of Acciard last week and handled Berry with ease this week winning 14-6.

In the battle of the Comeau’s it was Norm Comeau winning this one 12-8 as Paul started off strong but seemed to peter out down the home stretch letting Norm win 3 of the last 5 holes to capture the win.
I think Paul’s two snowmen on 5 and 6 let Norm back in this match and Norm’s par on 8 closed the deal as they both halved the 9th with bogey’s.

Lefty Steve Maddox and Skip Gray battled tooth and nail through the first 5 holes with neither one really giving up any ground but on the 6th hole Maddox’s 6 far surpassed Grays 8 and Gray found himself bogeying the 7th to find himself 2 down with 2 to play. Gray’s win on the 8th got him to one down and with both players bogeying the 9th Maddox was victorious.

Forecast for tomorrow is more golf. Hopefully the late day thunder showers will hold. See you at the course and always remember to bring your A game.

Wilderness Golf League starts it's 2010 season

March 4, 2010 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

Bill Wilson number one teeThe Wilderness Golf League met for the first time this season at Park Place Lanes in Salem, NH in preparation of the upcoming golf season at Campbell’s Scottish Highlands Golf Course.

President Bob Trottier opened up the meeting a little after 7:00 PM and we had 17 total players out of 24 show up. We lost three players this year Jim Murphy, Bob Cairns and Bob Sasso. They will be replaced by Dennis Croteau and Jim Zahareas and Rusty Gill.

Paul Comeau will be adding a few of the new rule changes to the league’s rules document that we will send out as soon as possible.

Looks like we tee off at 4:00PM on April 7th weather permitting.
I have a feeling we are in for a drier season than we have been used to the last few years. Expect to see cooler temps this season as well with some hot days in early to mid June, late July and early to mid August.

See you all on the 7th of April and enjoy the season.

The end is near…

August 22, 2009 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

Well we have now played 19 weeks and we have one remaining. Which team will play McGill, Sasso, Murphy and Imlach for the Championship?

In pretty good shape is Wilson, Acciard, Maloney and Steve Spratt. They are ahead by 14 Points over Trottier, Vigneault, Cairns and Skip Gray.
In previous match-ups between these two teams on 5/27 and 6/10 Wilson’s team defeated Trottier’s team 15-5 and 16-4. On 8/5 Trottiers team turned the table and won 16-4.

In order for Trottier’s team to overtake Wilson’s team they will need to win at least 18 points and Wilson’s can not win more than 3.

We will be playing the front nine which plays a little tougher than the back and this should prove to be a fun week as the winner of this match will play McGill’s team for the Championship on Sunday 8/30 at Campbell’s Scottish Highlands in an 18 hole final match.

Good Luck to all this Wednesday.

When defeating one Wilson is not enough.

July 26, 2009 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

It’s always a pleasure having the opportunity to play Bill Wilson whether straight up or in the same foursome. But, it’s even a greater pleasure to play his sister Joan as she is an excellent ball striker and drives the ball very well. You just can’t make a single mistake playing the Wilson family or you will suffer the consequences. Don’t believe me just ask Rick Maloney.

Bill Wilson took on Norm Pelletier this week in a grudge match dating back to May 13th where Pelletier pummeled the struggling baby brother of Joan Wilson. Bill has been playing a lot better these past few weeks as his team stays in first place for another week.

The match as expected would be close as Wilson jumped out to a 1 up lead after the 12th hole as Pelletier double bogeyed and Wilson parred. On 14 Pelletier was stroking and they both parred as Pelletier halved the match. On 15 Pelletier birdied and took closest to the pin to go 1 up. But, 16 hurt Wilson as he bogeyed and now Pelletier was dormie. Wilson’s birdie on 18 helped him salvage a point as Bill shot a respectful 38 by most players standards but knowing Bill I know he was disappointed by losing 3 holes to 2. Alas, his team is still holding on to first place.

When under par was the Norm

July 18, 2009 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

A big congratulation goes out to Norm Pelletier and Bob Trottier for shooting a one under par 35 on the front side tonight. Under clear blue skies and a yellow ball looming overhead these two A golfers showed us why they rank as number 2 and 3 in the league.

Trottier started off with 2 straight pars and on the 3rd tee said, after his ball rested on the green, I’ll 3 putt from there. Sure enough his wishes came true and that was his only blemish on a great round.

Norm played steady as usual as he played sub Brian Steeves who was subbing for Jim (I wish I was really playing instead of this) Marnie. Pelletier wins by 7 strokes net 3 and wins 3 holes to 2.  With birdies on 4 and 8 his only blemish was on the dogleg right 6th hole. Steeves battled hard but a double bogey on one and triple bogey on three led to Steeves demise.

How did the number one player fare this day?

Another wet day on the golf course

June 27, 2009 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

The sun never came out but what else is new it’s Wednesday.

Another bunch of great rounds this week but we were playing the back nine. The back nine on average yields an average of 3.25 strokes less than the front nine based on all the players in the league. To find your individual average go to individual players average.

In some key matchups we saw Bill Wilson giving Steve King 3 strokes and they finished, Wilson 38 King 41. There’s your 3 strokes. King’s birdie on 18 helped him square the match. Wilson is still not happy as his birdie on 16 was not enough to win the hole.

Acciard trips up Norm Comeau as Comeau falters at the 10th, 16th and 18th. Acciard’s birdie on 15 seems to have turned the tide in this match.

Rick Maloney had a tight match with Tom Hale but Hale forgets to show up on 13 as he breaks the record for the highest score on a single hole, 16. Even Rick tried to give him a 50 ft. putt. Tom used to be in the A flight yrs. ago. [Read more…]

Rain Rain Go Away

May 30, 2009 by Jay McGillicuddy 2 Comments

Well as the title says the rain held off just enough for us to get our round in. We had 21 of 24 guys show up which was great. Joan Wilson was going to sub for her baby brother Bill but Joan wasn’t feeling well and did not play. We were just missing Juke and Skip Gray.

Low medalist this week was Steve King with a 2 over par 37 while his only blemishes were on 10 and 14. Looks like a small adjustment for Steve in his stance has helped him get back to his old self. Now he says he needs to work on his putting. Job well done.

Steve played second low medalist Jim Marnie who shot an impressive 4 over 39 while faltering on 11, 12, 14, and 18. Jim won 10 but went down 3 of the next 4 holes and just couldn’t catch the red hot King.
