Unlikely Golfer Wins Closest to the Pin

May 8, 2009 by Jay McGillicuddy 2 Comments

As week six came to a close Rich Juknavorian wins the closest to the pin on hole 11 at Campbell’s Scottish Highlands. He hasn’t won in a couple of years but Rich hit a great ( I mean career) shot to over take a disappointed Jim Marnie. Out of 23 guys to play this hole Rich was dead last to tee off and BAM he took it away from Marnie.  Wilson wasn’t even close, missed the green completely. Congrats to Rich. Who won 15 ???

How do you score a quadruple bogey and still win the hole? Just ask Skip Gray as he dubbed his way to the par 3 15th hole only to succumb to another dubber on this hole Paul Comeau who scored an unbelievable 7 on a par 3 and he still wins the hole. Bad luck I guess.  I should be careful as I too was in the woods on the right also. YUK…

Week 4 Rained Out

April 23, 2009 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

Well it was a very soggy day at Campbells Scottish Highlands Golf Course Wednesday April 22nd and our weekly matches were postponed. We had a quorum and it was decided not to play as the course was saturated and it would have been pretty ugly out there.

At least I got to rest my knee for another week. See you all next Wednesday and first tee time should be about 4:50 PM. The Vagabonds start their season next week.

Do you feel guilty for not giving a short putt?

April 19, 2009 by Jay McGillicuddy 7 Comments

The reason I ask is because I was wondering if you ever felt guilty for not giving your opponent a short putt. I played Jim Marnie on Wednesday and as we trudged our way around the front nine our match was fairly close. Yeah, we gave each other a few tap ins and a few short putts but when it came down to the last hole that is when I began to think. Jim had about a 3-4 foot putt, I was one hole up and two strokes down but more importantly I didn’t know how my teammates were doing, were they ahead or were their matches close too?

0-13 leads to his first par

April 12, 2009 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

Week two saw everyone bundled up trying to stay warm again. These early April matches sure due play havoc with the creaky old bones and muscles. At tee time the temps were hovering just around 40 degrees with a gusty breeze coming in from the west.

Our group teed off 2nd and I was playing Steve King and we were with Bob Cairns and new comer Jack Goulet. I don’t think he is any relation to Robert Goulet. I should have asked.

Bob and Jack led us off on the tenth tee and their tee balls went this way and that way. I teed off and followed right in their footsteps and dubbed my tee ball right in the hazard. Steady Steve put his ball right in the middle of the fairway. [Read more…]

Week one was promising weather wise. But…

April 5, 2009 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

Well, we had all 24 guys show up ready to play. The forecast was for temps in the 50’s and partly cloudy skies. Then the weather as usual here in Southern NH turned for the worse.

I had to head to Portsmouth, NH for a 9:00 am  class to teach and it was warming up and bright and sunny when I left. As I approached Portsmouth I could see the bank of clouds approaching from the east off the ocean. I heard they were to approach about 11:00 am so they were a couple of hours early.

As tee time approached, the clouds were thickening and temps were dipping. While you climbed the hill to Campbell’s Scottish Highlands you could see the flags unfurling in the strong breeze that was now engulfing the putting green and parking lot. It was not looking like previous days forecast of partly cloudy and fifty degree temps.

2009 Wilderness Golf League Starts April 1st.

March 22, 2009 by Jay McGillicuddy Leave a Comment

The Oaks Golf Course Hole #10Another season is upon us and this will be my 20th year in the Wilderness Golf  League as I started playing with Tom Hale, Norm Comeau, Alan Imlach and Rick Maloney in 1990. I can’t believe how the time has flown by.  The five of us are the only ones left of the original 24 players that started at Pine Valley Golf Course in Pelham, NH in 1990.

We have seen a lot of players come and go and we certainly hope we get to see a couple of original members that may sub like Mike Linder and Buzz Franzen from time to time. These two guys are great friends and I do hope we get to play together this year. Buzz hits from th ewrong side of the ball and has a unique putitng style and Mike Linder has what we call Eagle eyes. He will spot your ball 100 yards away and tell you it’s sitting next the rock that looks like a bear and the tree that looks like a rock. You can laugh but it’s true he has th ebest eye sight I know of any golfer or human I ever met. Unbelievable. Sometimes you just want to try and lose your ball to see if he can find it. He won’t let you down.
